Primary Purpose:

Directs and manages the overall program of instrumental music for the district. Provides students with an opportunity to participate in extracurricular band activities and ensure compliance with all state, University Interscholastic League (UIL), and district requirements. Plans activities to achieve district, region, and state recognition. Acts as Fine Arts chair on campus, and liaison between District Fine Arts Coordinator and feeder schools.

 

Education / Certification:

  1. Bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university.
  2. Valid Texas teaching certificate.

Special Knowledge / Skills:

  1. Knowledge of overall operation of instrumental music program.
  2. Ability to manage budget and personnel.
  3. Knowledge of state and UIL policies governing band.
  4. Ability to implement policy and procedures.
  5. Ability to interpret data.
  6. Strong communication, public relations, and interpersonal skills.

Experience / Other Requirements:

  1. Three years teaching and band directing experience.
  2. Class B CDL with P and S endorsement is preferred.

Major Responsibilities and Duties:

Program Planning

  1. Meets with district Fine Arts Coordinator periodically to discuss feeder schools, Fine Arts Programs calendars, issues, and accolades.
  2. Directs high school instrumental performers, including marching band, orchestra, concert band, soloists, and ensembles.
  3. Establishes performance requirements, enforce academic requirements, and verify each student’s eligibility to participate in band.
  4. Provides for band participation at extracurricular events, including concerts, football games, pep rallies, parades, and UIL activities.
  5. Arranges transportation, lodging, and meals for out-of-town events.
  6. Complies with federal and state laws, State Board of Education rule, UIL rules, and board policy in the band area.
  7. Supports band booster club activities.
  8. Obtains and uses evaluative findings (including student achievement data) to determine program effectiveness and ensure that program renewal is continuous and responds to student needs.
  9. Recommends policies to improve program.

Budget and Inventory

  1. Ensures that programs are cost-effective and funds are managed wisely.
  2. Compiles budgets and cost estimates based on documented program needs.
  3. Coordinates fundraising activities and manage funds.
  4. Maintains current inventory of all fixed assets within department.
  5. Oversees process of cleaning, repairing, and storing all band equipment.

Instruction

  1. Develops and implements plans for instrumental music program and show written evidence of preparation as required.
  2. Prepares lessons that reflect accommodations for individual student differences.
  3. Presents subject matter according to guidelines established by the Texas Education Agency, board policies, and administrative regulations.
  4. Plans and uses appropriate instructional and learning strategies, activities, materials, and equipment that reflect understanding of the learning styles and needs of students assigned.
  5. Conducts ongoing assessments of student achievement through formal and informal testing.
  6. Creates an environment conducive to learning and appropriate for the physical, social, and emotional development of students.

Student Management

  1. Applies and enforces student discipline in accordance with the Student Code of Conduct and student handbook.
  2. Accompanies and supervises students on out-of-town trips.
  3. Takes all necessary and reasonable precautions to protect students, equipment, materials, and facilities.

Communication

  1. Establishes and maintains open communication by conducting conferences with parents, students, principals, and teachers.
  2. Maintains professional relationship with colleagues, students, parents, and community members

Personnel Management

  1. Assists with recruitment, selection, training, supervision, and evaluation of assistant band directors.
  2. Responsible for properly maintaining district records, adhering to all policies set forth by the district for records maintenance ad learning the records retention schedule for department records.
  3. Performs other duties as assigned.

Supervisory Responsibilities:

Monitors the performance of the assistant band director.
