Smithers Environmental Risk Sciences division is seeking applicants for two full-time Associate Chemists at our Wareham, MA location.
Job Summary
Position is expected to perform a variety of routine and non-routine procedures requiring precision and accuracy in support of environmental fate and metabolism studies or projects.
Job functions include but not limited to test system setup and maintenance; sampling and sample analysis procedures; calibrations and standard instrument operation; data recording and compilation of analytical test results (includes instrumental or operational record-keeping logs according to GLP requirements); analyses in support of environmental fate and metabolism studies. Position is expected to detect and report problems in standardized procedures due to instrumental, sample, or test system failures. The position will also assist in study problem solving and developing new methodologies and technologies.

- Job Duties
- Completion of standard procedures requiring precision and accuracy in support of laboratory operations and projects, as outlined in the department’s skill matrix for this job level.
- Able to keep organized records and complete documentation per GLP requirements and facility SOPs.
- Able to work with balances, meters, pumps, rotary evaporators, centrifuges, ovens, stir plates, GCs or HPLCs, and/or and other standard laboratory equipment, as assigned.
- Able to work with environmental samples like soils, plant parts, animal tissues, activated sludge, and pond water and sediment.
- Able to work with test compounds (including 14C-labeled materials), reference analytical substances, solvents, detergents, acids, bases, resins, silicone and activated carbon.
- Able to perform data handling and calculation of results.
- Able to make limited decisions on data acceptability (e.g. acceptable extractability and material balance) and appropriately engage senior staff for problem resolution and support.
- Possesses good technical writing skills in chemistry procedures [written and oral comprehension, written and oral expression]. Ability to integrate observations (visual and written, discrimination) into evaluation process.
- Possesses good mathematical reasoning (College level mathematics).
- Ability to work at a fast pace on multiple projects and prioritize work assignments
- Able to perform routine laboratory cleanliness, including routine clean-up and glassware washing.
- May be assigned ordering chemicals and supplies for the department and maintaining various inventories.

- Chemical Safety
- Must be able to comprehend the potential hazards of the chemicals in use and adhere to the proper safety techniques as dictated by the Safety Manual and/or Management.

- Must be able to wear gloves, lab coat, eye protection, sleeves, hearing protection, pesticide suit, plastic booties, dust masks, a respirator and a face mask.
- Must be able to understand and follow laboratory safety standards.
