Contract Family Law Attorney

Smedley Law Group, P.C. is looking for an experienced New Jersey family law attorney to join our team on a contract basis.We are a growing South Jersey family law firm, and we need someone who can step in and hit the ground running. This is not an entry-level position, and we are not looking for someone who needs to learn family law from scratch. We are looking for an attorney who understands the practice, can take ownership of assigned work, and knows how to move a case forward.

The work may include drafting pleadings and motions, discovery, legal research and writing, client communication, settlement negotiations, court appearances, and other substantive family law work depending on experience and availability.

You may be a good fit if you:

- Are admitted and in good standing in New Jersey;

- Have meaningful experience practicing New Jersey family law;

- Can draft strong, polished work without extensive supervision or rewriting;

- Understand how to manage deadlines and competing priorities;

- Are comfortable communicating directly with clients and opposing counsel;

- Exercise good judgment and know when something needs to be escalated;

- Are responsive, reliable, and able to work independently; and

- Believe clients deserve both excellent legal work and excellent communication.

Experience handling divorce, custody, support, equitable distribution, post-judgment matters, domestic violence matters, and/or family law motion practice is strongly preferred.

This is a contract position with flexibility as to workload and schedule. Remote work is available, although the ability to handle in-person court appearances in New Jersey is a plus. The amount and type of work can be tailored based upon the attorney’s experience, availability, and the needs of the firm.

While the position is intended to begin on a contract basis, **there may be an opportunity for the role to become a permanent position if, after working together, both the attorney and the firm agree that it is the right fit.** There is no expectation or commitment on either side that the relationship become permanent.

We are particularly interested in attorneys who want substantive family law work without necessarily wanting the structure or commitment of a traditional full-time law firm position. This could be an excellent fit for an experienced attorney returning to practice, building a solo practice, seeking supplemental work, or simply looking for greater flexibility.
