What are the responsibilities and job description for the Court Advocate position at SMCFA?
We're looking for a very special person to join our amazing team of dedicated, caring and expert advocates, attorneys, case managers, crisis workers and others who serve victims of domestic and dating violence and sexual assault/sexual abuse in Southern Maryland. Superheroes, really. The ability to leap tall buildings in a single bound is not required (neither are tights), but we are looking for an individual who can help bring safety, stability and hope to traumatized individuals.
- Skills/Abilities Required for Consideration: At least two years' experience working with individuals in a trauma-informed workplace, preferably one which works with survivors of intimate partner violence; and/or an in-depth understanding of the cycle and dynamics of domestic violence and sexual assault/sexual abuse. The person we hire will be compassionate, empathetic and non-judgmental; s/he will also be a quick learner, non-defensive when receiving feedback, and deeply committed (as evidenced by past work and/or volunteer experiences) to a violence-free world, and to helping others create and sustain healthy, equality-based, and supportive relationships. Experience where possible and general comfort (essential) with Word, Excel and database software, is desirable. Also important: the ability to manage and coordinate multiple tasks; the ability to work effectively with a wide range of individuals, from victims to colleagues: judges, law enforcement, attorneys and others; a lifelong passion for helping others; a desire to excel at all you do; and a warmth, generosity of spirit, and sense of humor that are central to who you are and quickly noticed by the people you encounter in all aspects of your life. And, last but not least: the person hired will be someone who can work independently and is committed to doing high-quality work not because someone is watching and evaluating, but because it's just who you are.
- How You'll Be Working: You will be working at our Calvert District Court office, meeting with clients, observing the domestic violence docket each day, approaching individuals to offer our no-cost services, helping victims fill out petitions for protective orders, and working with our other staff members to secure additional services for our clients. You will also accompany clients to their protective order hearings and keep a record of the services provided in our database. This will include keeping detailed case notes for each client; working with other professionals also serving the individual (i.e. their attorney; their therapist; etc.); and keeping detailed records of the services provided and help to prepare the documentation required in order to submit quarterly reports required by funding sources.
- Who You'll Be Working With: We are dedicated to consistenly offering services provided by the most delightful, committed and professional team of Superheroes you'll ever encounter! We care deeply about the people we serve, provide high-quality, personalized services..and we'll welcome you as part of our team that makes that happen.
