The Wastewater Treatment Plant Operator (WWTPO) works together with the Filter Press Operator to ensure the safe and efficient operation and maintenance of the wastewater treatment plant.  The WWTPO must understand and demonstrate knowledge of all wastewater practices, including but not limited to:  a thorough understanding of the wastewater ponds and operational processes (i.e.:  mud dewatering, primary clarifier, anaerobic and aerobic processes, secondary clarifier, and tertiary treatment) as well as equipment (i.e. pumps, mixers, valves, and heat exchangers).  The WWTPO must acquire a State of Minnesota Class D Wastewater Treatment Operator license within 18 months of the position and continue to progress in licensure.

The WWTPO performs standard laboratory analysis and must have knowledge of laboratory procedures and practices, sampling schedules, analysis, and instrumentation, including but not limited to:  pH, conductivity, and temperature probes; chemical oxygen demand (COD) reactor; muffle furnace; drying oven; desiccator; analytical balance; and dissolved oxygen meter.  Attention to detail is vital in this role, and the WWTPO must have basic computer skills including the ability to enter data points.  Basic laboratory aptitude is required with the ability to analyze data points to spot anomalies and troubleshoot equipment breakdowns.

The WWTPO must possess intermediate mechanical aptitude with the ability to diagnose and solve mechanical issues.  The employee will inspect, troubleshoot, maintain, repair, and replace a variety of mechanical equipment, including but not limited to:  pumps, conveyors, gear boxes, and electric motors.  The WWTPO must also have knowledge of equipment components such as shafts, bearings, valves, seals, pistons, belts, and gears and will be required to work with hand tools, portable power tools, precision measuring instruments, test equipment, and pump alignment equipment.  The WWTPO must have basic welding skills, including cutting with a torch.  The employee must also be able to operate light equipment (i.e.:  gators, skid loaders, various fork lifts, and pickup trucks) in a safe, efficient manner.  This position requires a valid driver’s license.

The WWTPO is responsible for promoting safe work behaviors, which includes performing equipment inspections, ensuring life-saving programs are adhered to including lock out tag out, fall protection, and confined spaces, and monitoring preventative maintenance activities; committing to environmental compliance, food safety, food quality compliance; and promoting SMBSC as an Employer of Choice by ensuring a work area that promotes mutual respect and professionalism.  The WWTPO must possess strong written and verbal communication skills with employees and supervisors alike.

This position must have knowledge of safe operating procedures, personal protective equipment, and quality standards and must complete all necessary training and Job Safety Analyses to operate equipment or perform position tasks.

Performs other duties as directed and works overtime as assigned/required.
