Job Summary:
The Heavy-Duty Tank Head Forming Machine Operator is responsible for operating, monitoring, and maintaining heavy-duty hydraulic or mechanical forming equipment used to produce tank heads, dished ends, or pressure vessel components. This role ensures that all parts are formed to precise specifications, meet quality standards, and comply with safety regulations.
Key Responsibilities:
- Machine Operation:
- Set up, operate, and adjust heavy-duty forming presses, spinning lathes, or flanging machines used to shape tank heads and pressure vessel ends.
- Select and install proper dies, tooling, and forming attachments.
- Control machine functions such as pressure, speed, and temperature to achieve desired dimensions and surface finishes.
- Production & Quality:
- Interpret blueprints, engineering drawings, and work orders to determine specifications and forming parameters.
- Measure and inspect finished components using calipers, micrometers, and templates to verify conformance to tolerances.
- Record production data, material usage, and inspection results accurately.
- Maintenance & Troubleshooting:
- Perform routine preventive maintenance on machines and tooling.
- Detect and report mechanical or hydraulic issues, and assist maintenance personnel with repairs as needed.
- Safety & Compliance:
- Follow all company safety rules, OSHA standards, and proper lifting procedures.
- Wear and maintain required PPE (personal protective equipment).
- Maintain a clean and organized work area.
- Collaboration:
- Work with engineers, quality control, and production planners to improve forming processes and reduce waste.
- Train junior operators or assist in cross-training within the department.
Qualifications:
- Education:
- High school diploma or GED required.
- Technical or vocational training in metal forming or machine operation preferred.
- Experience:
- 3–5 years of experience operating heavy-duty forming, flanging, or dishing equipment in a metal fabrication or pressure vessel manufacturing environment.
- Experience working with carbon steel, stainless steel, and alloy materials.
- Skills:
- Strong mechanical aptitude and understanding of hydraulic forming systems.
- Ability to read blueprints, work orders, and geometric tolerances.
- Proficient in using measuring tools and gauges.
- Basic welding or machining knowledge is a plus.
Physical Requirements:
- Ability to lift up to 50 lbs and perform physically demanding tasks.
- Standing, bending, and operating equipment for extended periods.
- Comfortable working in hot, noisy, or industrial environments.
Work Environment:
Heavy manufacturing facility with large-scale forming machinery, cranes, and forklifts. May involve exposure to heat, vibration, and metal dust.
