The Senior Design Associate plays a key role in bridging design vision and technical execution across a variety of project types. This individual leads design development efforts, supports project delivery, and ensures the production of high-quality construction documents. This is a production-heavy role best suited for someone who enjoys being hands-on in the work: developing drawing sets, solving technical challenges, and carrying projects from concept through documentation.
Working closely with Project Managers and senior staff, the Senior Design Associate is responsible for advancing design concepts, coordinating with internal and external teams, and mentoring junior staff. This role requires a balance of creative thinking, technical expertise, and strong communication skills.
Key Responsibilities
- Lead design development for assigned project components from concept through construction documentation
- Translate design intent into clear, accurate, and buildable drawings
- Ensure all work aligns with project goals, client expectations, and firm standards
- Participate in the preparation of permit sets, construction documents, and presentation materials
- Collaborate with Project Managers to maintain design integrity throughout project execution
- Coordinate with consultants, engineers, contractors, and clients to resolve design and technical challenges
- Perform fieldwork to document existing conditions and support project accuracy
- Manage drawing production, including drafting, detailing, and specifications
- Ensure compliance with applicable building codes, regulations, and industry standards
- Review and revise drawings based on feedback, redlines, and quality control processes
- Maintain organized and accurate project documentation
- Mentor and oversee the work of Design Associates, providing guidance and support
- Promote best practices in drafting, design development, and documentation
- Contribute to a collaborative and growth-oriented team environment
- Provide input on firm-wide design strategies, standards, and process improvements
- Support business development efforts through presentations, proposal materials, and client engagement
Qualifications
· Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Architecture or related field preferred
· 5 years of experience in an architecture or design firm (10 years in lieu of degree)
· Strong proficiency in Revit required; experience with AutoCAD, Adobe Suite, and 3D modeling software preferred
· Solid understanding of construction documentation, detailing, and building systems
· Working knowledge of applicable building codes, zoning regulations, and industry standards
· Experience coordinating with consultants (structural, MEP, civil, etc.)
· Demonstrated ability to produce and manage complete drawing sets from design through construction
· Experience mentoring or guiding junior staff preferred
· Licensed Architect or progress toward licensure preferred
