Smart Septic is seeking an experienced Excavating Foreman to lead septic system installations from start to finish. This role is ideal for a hands-on leader who understands septic construction, excavation, and crew management, and who takes pride in doing high-quality work that meets county and state requirements.
The Excavating Foreman will be responsible for running jobs in the field, operating equipment, coordinating crews, and ensuring installations are completed safely, efficiently, and to code.
Key Responsibilities
- Lead and manage septic installation crews on residential and light commercial projects
- Read and interpret septic permits, site plans, soil evaluations, and county requirements
- Layout and install septic systems including tanks, drainfields, beds, mounds, drywells, and sewer leads
- Operate excavation equipment (excavators, skid steers, loaders, etc.)
- Ensure proper grades, elevations, slopes, and setbacks are met
- Coordinate inspections and communicate with office staff and inspectors as needed
- Maintain jobsite safety, organization, and professionalism
- Train and mentor crew members on proper installation techniques
- Perform daily job documentation (photos, measurements, progress updates)
- Maintain equipment and report maintenance needs
Required Qualifications
- 3–5 years of septic installation and excavation experience
- Prior experience as a lead operator or foreman preferred
- Strong understanding of septic system construction and materials
- Ability to read permits, plans, and elevations
- Comfortable running and supervising a crew
- Strong attention to detail and pride in workmanship
- Valid driver’s license (CDL a plus, but not required)
- Ability to work outdoors in varying weather conditions
Preferred (But Not Required)
- Michigan septic installer experience
- Familiarity with county health department inspections
- CDL or ability to obtain one
- Experience with mounds, engineered systems, or complex sites

Pay: $29.41 - $35.42 per hour
Expected hours: 30 – 50 per week
