What are the responsibilities and job description for the Powder Coat Supervisor / Manager position at Smart Laser & Manufacturing, LLC?
About the Company
Smart Laser & Manufacturing is a growing metal fabrication shop based in Forney, TX, serving commercial and industrial customers. We specialize in laser cutting, forming, welding, and custom fabrication.
We’ve recently invested in a new powder coating booth and finishing setup and are building this department the right way from the start. We’re looking for an experienced powder coating professional to run the operation, set standards, and take ownership.
About the Role
This is not a “stand at the booth and spray all day” position.
You will be responsible for the entire powder coating process, including setup, quality, scheduling, troubleshooting, and future team growth. You’ll work closely with fabrication and welding to ensure parts are finished correctly, on time, and to spec.
If you’ve ever said “this shop would run better if powder coat was done right” — this role is for you.
What You’ll Be Responsible For

- Surface preparation: cleaning, blasting, masking, racking
- Powder application, cure verification, and final inspection
- Identifying and correcting defects (orange peel, fish eyes, thin coverage, etc.)
- Establishing quality standards and repeatable processes
- Coordinating job flow with fabrication and welding teams
- Managing powder, supplies, and consumable inventory
- Maintaining equipment and troubleshooting issues
- Training and mentoring additional powder coat employees as we grow
- Maintaining a clean, safe, and organized work area
What We’re Looking For (Required)
- 3 years of hands-on powder coating experience
- Experience running powder coat operations independently
- Strong understanding of prep, application, and cure processes
- Ability to troubleshoot and prevent finish defects
- Comfortable working in a custom fabrication environment (small batches, varied parts)
- Reliable, self-motivated, and quality-driven
This Role Is Not a Fit If You…
- Only want to spray parts and clock out
- Don’t want responsibility for quality or outcomes
- Need constant direction or supervision
- Have only worked in high-volume, conveyor-line environments
Preferred (Nice to Have)
- Supervisory or lead experience
- Experience helping set up or improve a powder coat department
- Familiarity with fabricated steel parts and weldments
- Ability to read basic shop drawings or work orders
Pay & Benefits
- $20-$30/hour, based on experience
- Hourly (overtime eligible)
- Steady, full-time work
- Opportunity to build and lead a department from the ground up
- Benefits available (details discussed during interview)
- Family-owned shop with direct access to leadership and fast decisions
