Job Description
York Hospital is seeking an experienced Nursing Director – Inpatient Care to provide strategic leadership and operational oversight for the Medical/Surgical Units and Intensive Care Unit (ICU).
This leadership role is responsible for ensuring the delivery of safe, high-quality, patient-centered care while overseeing clinical operations, nursing practice standards, staffing, regulatory compliance, quality initiatives, budgeting, and interdisciplinary collaboration.
The Nursing Director serves as a key member of the hospital leadership team and assumes 24-hour responsibility, authority, and accountability for inpatient nursing services and departmental operations.
Key Responsibilities
Leadership & Operations
- Provide leadership and operational oversight for Medical/Surgical Units and ICU
- Ensure delivery of safe, efficient, and high-quality patient care
- Direct daily nursing operations and patient care activities
- Establish and maintain nursing standards, policies, and procedures
- Promote a culture of accountability, collaboration, and continuous improvement
- Support organizational goals and strategic initiatives
Clinical Excellence & Quality
- Monitor patient safety, quality outcomes, and performance improvement initiatives
- Ensure compliance with regulatory and accreditation standards
- Lead quality improvement programs and evidence-based practice initiatives
- Develop and implement action plans to improve patient outcomes
- Promote patient and family-centered care practices
Human Resources Management
• Manage recruitment, retention, orientation, and professional development of nursing staff
• Conduct performance evaluations and staff coaching
• Support leadership development and succession planning
• Ensure appropriate staffing levels and workforce management
• Foster employee engagement and team development
Financial Management
• Develop and manage departmental budgets
• Monitor productivity, resource utilization, and operational efficiency
• Participate in financial planning and cost containment initiatives
• Ensure responsible allocation of departmental resources
Interdisciplinary Collaboration
• Collaborate closely with physicians, nursing leaders, and interdisciplinary teams
• Participate in hospital committees and leadership meetings
• Support care coordination and patient flow initiatives
• Partner with medical staff to implement clinical policies and best practices
Regulatory Compliance
• Maintain compliance with Joint Commission, CMS, OSHA, state, and federal regulations
• Ensure adherence to nursing standards of practice
• Support risk management and patient safety programs
• Monitor compliance with hospital policies and procedures
Required Qualifications
• Graduate of an Accredited School of Nursing
• Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) Required
• Current Maine RN License or Compact RN License in Good Standing
• Leadership experience within an acute care hospital setting
• Strong knowledge of inpatient nursing operations
• Excellent communication, leadership, and organizational skills
• Experience managing staff, budgets, and quality initiatives
Preferred Qualifications
• Master of Science in Nursing (MSN) Preferred
• Specialty Nursing Certification Preferred
• Leadership Certification Preferred
• Previous Director-Level Leadership Experience
