Compensation: $237,000 – $274,000 annually

Position Summary
The Nurse Director, Hospital – Maternal Child Health provides senior-level clinical, operational, and strategic leadership for Labor & Delivery and Maternal Child Health services within a 24/7 acute care hospital environment. This role is accountable for patient safety, quality outcomes, regulatory compliance, financial performance, workforce engagement, and the delivery of evidence-based care across multiple units.
The Nurse Director partners closely with physicians, executive leadership, and cross-functional stakeholders to design and implement care delivery models, optimize resources, and advance Kaiser Permanente’s mission, values, and strategic priorities.
Essential ResponsibilitiesClinical & Patient Care Leadership
- Establish and maintain best-practice care delivery models across Maternal Child Health and Labor & Delivery units
- Ensure safe, high-quality, standardized patient care in compliance with all legal and regulatory requirements
- Lead investigations and resolution of patient, family, and member concerns related to care delivery
- Maintain clinical expertise and provide clinical supervision, competency validation, and licensure oversight
- Ensure continuous survey readiness and compliance with TJC, state, federal, and local regulations
Operational & Strategic Leadership
- Oversee operations of multiple hospital units in a 24/7 environment
- Translate organizational strategy into actionable operational plans and performance metrics
- Lead emergency preparedness planning, training, and recovery efforts
- Champion short- and long-term operational initiatives and system improvements
- Drive performance improvement initiatives related to quality, safety, service, and cost
Financial & Resource Management
- Develop, manage, and oversee departmental budgets and financial performance
- Ensure appropriate staffing levels, workload distribution, and resource utilization
- Evaluate and oversee the use and maintenance of equipment, supplies, and medications
- Analyze costs, forecasts, and operational data to inform business planning and decision-making
People Leadership & Talent Development
- Recruit, develop, and retain a highly skilled and engaged leadership and nursing workforce
- Provide coaching, performance feedback, and professional development opportunities
- Build internal collaborative networks and promote succession planning
- Align workforce planning with operational and business objectives
- Foster a culture of accountability, collaboration, and continuous learning
Collaboration & Stakeholder Engagement
- Partner with physicians and clinical leaders to align care delivery initiatives across the continuum
- Collaborate with internal and external stakeholders to achieve optimal patient outcomes
- Gain cross-functional support for business plans and departmental priorities
- Address escalated operational and clinical issues with sound judgment and timely resolution
QualificationsMinimum Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree in Nursing (BSN)
- Master’s degree in Nursing or related field
- Minimum seven (7) years of experience in patient care delivery
- Minimum two (2) years of experience managing operational or project budgets
- Minimum two (2) years of leadership experience with direct reports
- Active Registered Nurse (RN) license in the state of California (required at hire)
- Basic Life Support (BLS) certification (required at hire)
Required Experience & Skills
- Maternal Child Health and Labor & Delivery clinical background
- Strong leadership, management, and decision-making capabilities
- Expertise in patient safety, quality improvement, and evidence-based practice
- Knowledge of healthcare regulations, accreditation standards, and compliance requirements
- Financial acumen and experience managing complex operations
- Change management and business process improvement experience
- Strong communication, conflict resolution, and stakeholder management skills
- Proficiency with Microsoft Office and healthcare information systems
Preferred Qualifications
- Experience leading quality improvement or operational transformation initiatives
- Demonstrated ability to analyze data and drive informed decision-making
- Experience in large, integrated healthcare systems
Work Environment
- Onsite hospital-based role
- 24 hours/day, 7 days/week operational responsibility
