What are the responsibilities and job description for the Childcare Center Director position at Small World Too?
Small World Too is seeking a qualified, full-time Childcare Director to lead our West Roxbury location. Established in 2018 on the grounds of the VA Hospital, our center serves both VA employees and the wider community. The Director will be responsible for on-site leadership and daily operations, reporting directly to the Board of Directors, and working closely with the Board to ensure the delivery of high-quality childcare services.
Minimum Qualifications: A Bachelor’s degree in early childhood education or elementary education; or an Associate’s degree in early childhood education, or related field, and currently enrolled in a Bachelor’s degree program in early childhood education. Successful candidates should have a minimum of five years’ experience as an early childhood center Assistant or Associate Director including direct classroom teaching experience. The candidate must have at least Director I certification from the state/EEC and meet any other requirements, such as CPR and first aid certification, that EEC may establish. The candidate must meet National Association for the Education of Young Children (NAEYC) requirements.
The successful candidate should be a good listener, have excellent customer service skills, be able to work with parents to resolve problems by defining issues and identifying possible solutions, have effective written and verbal communication skills, and have the ability to work efficiently despite frequent interruptions and changes in priorities. The candidate must also be passionate about the needs and education of children, staff, and parents, and strive to maintain a workplace that encourages interpersonal warmth as well as a spirit of fun and a shared sense of humor.
Proficient computer skills, including Microsoft Office suite, are strongly desired. Experience in training adults and ESL teaching is a strong plus.
Supervises: The Director will support lead teachers, teachers, teaching assistants, teaching aides, specialists, volunteers, clerical help, and outside vendors. The Director is responsible for the coordination of classroom schedules, development and implementation of classroom goals, and supervision of the educational program. In conjunction with the staff, the Director will develop, supplement, and constantly evaluate the educational program based on developmental needs of young children.
Staff and Administrative Duties: The Director hires new staff and is responsible for ongoing staff supervision and evaluation, and handles terminations should the need arise. In consultation with the staff, the Director plans in-service training and development. Some of these in-service sessions shall be included in the monthly staff meetings. The Director maintains positive relations with teachers, families, VA personnel, licensing authorities, and community contacts.
Additional Director responsibilities:
- Reports to and works with the Board of Directors on all aspects of the Center’s management, including monthly budget and finances, strategic planning, and fundraising
- Creates and implements the Center’s budget, with input from the Board of Directors
- Manages staff payroll and adheres to Center budgets
- Conducts weekly and monthly compliance checks, including but not limited to monthly spending reconciliations, annual worker’s comp
- Is responsible for planning a continuing education program with the staff and provides opportunities for professional development
- Ensures proper compliance with Center policies and handbooks
- Assists teachers in curriculum planning
- Maintains a strong arts program within the Center, hiring and overseeing part-time specialists in subjects such as music, dance and movement, storytelling and art
- Is responsible for interviewing and coordinating volunteers
- Is responsible for purchasing new equipment, subject to review by the Board of Directors
- Manages payroll vendor, with guidance from the Board of Directors
- Maintains regular communication and a strong working relationship with the Small World Director at the Jamaica Plain Childcare Center location on cross-organizational projects and reports
- Maintains contact with childcare center directors in the community
- Applies for grants, ensuring that all requirements are met, seeking help from the Board as necessary
- Maintains and develops food programs in compliance with CACFP
- Plans the yearly calendar, with the Board of Directors
- Is responsible for marketing the Center to prospective families
- Resolves complaints and takes disciplinary action on behalf of parents and staff
- Supports and creates enrichment schedules
- Fosters a culture of acceptance and celebration of diversity
