As an Emissions Technician with SM Energy, you will be responsible for conducting LDAR (Leak Detection & Repair) surveys throughout West Texas to ensure compliance with federal and state environmental regulations. This role is largely field-based and involves driving to multiple locations to complete these surveys. This role will also have an office component to attend meetings, compile data, and complete any reports. The Emissions Technician will report to the Air Supervisor - Field Air Compliance and will be responsible for communicating project progress, and repairs to internal and external or contract teams.

Role/Responsibilities

  • Conduct routine OGI (Optical Gas Imaging), AVO (Audio, Visual & Olfactory) and Method 22 LDAR inspections at a variety of locations in West Texas on varying schedules.
  • OGI surveys will be required to be completed with an OGI Camera (camera will be provided by the company).
  • Perform or schedule the inspection, calibration, and basic maintenance on environmental monitoring equipment.
  • Responsible for logging LDAR data after surveys are complete.
  • Communicate findings and assist in coordinating corrective measures with field and operations personnel and confirm repairs have been made via OGI camera.
  • Maintain knowledge and fluency with current and changing regulatory laws for the projects managed.
  • While performing the duties of this job, the team members may travel extensively to fieldwork sites and be required to deliver results on strict deadlines.
  • Understand field safety protocols in varying weather conditions.
  • Participate in safety meetings, team meetings, and other environmental compliance briefings.
  • Maintain detailed and organized records of field data, inspections, and corrective actions.
  • Other duties and training assigned.

Required Qualifications & Experience

  • Minimum 2 years’ Oil and Gas/industry field experience.
  • Familiarity with EPA Method 22, LDAR programs (OGI, AVO), and emissions monitoring protocols.
  • Prior LDAR knowledge or related experience preferred.
  • Previous LDAR database experience is preferred.
  • Optical Gas Imaging (OGI) certification required. The company will pay for training if applicant has not been certified before or needs a refresher course.
  • Use of MS Office (Word, Excel, Outlook, Vizio, Teams), Adobe Products, etc., required. Use of basic office equipment: scanner, copier, and PC.
  • Industry knowledge, with strong mechanical aptitude.
  • Experience with entering data, using multiple database platforms and coding invoices preferred.
  • Experience or knowledge with high H2S areas and corresponding safety procedures is preferred in those areas.
  • Will be required to wear FR apparel and other required safety equipment while in all field locations including but not limited to an H2S monitor, hard hat and approved work boots all year round.

  • Maintain a positive attitude with the ability to multi-task and work well in groups or as part of a team.
  • Ability to work safely in a field environment, while driving a company vehicle and in an office environment.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills (Internally and with Clients/Consultants).
  • Ability to work independently in field environments and communicate effectively with multidisciplinary teams.

Education

  • High School Diploma or GED
  • College background in environmental science or related subjects recommended/ preferred.

Location/Schedule/Travel Requirements

  • West Texas
  • Must reside within the area or be willing to relocate.
  • 5 days on (M-F) and 2 days off (Sat, Sun)
  • Valid driver's license: ability to travel to multiple field locations as required in a company vehicle.
  • Must maintain company vehicle and follow the company driving SWP.
  • Attend driver safety training and other required safety training courses from the company.
