What are the responsibilities and job description for the Salem Boat Charter Captain (Seasonal) position at Slow Wake Society?
Job Summary
Come spend your summer of 2026 as a valued charter boat captain in charming Salem, Massachusetts! We’re looking for friendly, professional, and United States Coast Guard licensed captains to take the helm for 90-minute harbor cruises for up to 6 guests.
Duties
- Safely operate and navigate 22' charter boats, ensuring compliance with all maritime safety regulations.
- Manage day-to-day vessel operations, including maintenance checks and light cleaning
- Oversee safety drills, passenger briefings, and emergency procedures to guarantee guest safety at all times
- Conduct pre-departure inspections
- Maintain detailed logs of trips, safety checks, and maintenance activities for regulatory compliance
- Please note – the charters don’t call for tour narration although captains are asked to point out local points of interest along the harbor. Guests aboard our charters are drawn to the experience of simply enjoying being on the water with friends, family, and close co-workers.
Seaonal/Flexible Schedule:
- For this seasonal opportunity (early May – last week of October), charters will approximately run Wednesdays to Sundays at 11 a.m., 1 p.m., 3 p.m., and 5 p.m., with additional charters added as needed.
- For the “spooky season” months of September and October, charters will run 7 days a week.
Qualifications
- Must possess a USCG Master's License.
- Must be at least 18 years old and legally authorized to work in the United States.
- Must pass a pre-employment drug test and participate in a mandatory USCG Random Drug Testing Program.
- Must safely operate vessel in accordance with all Coast Guard rules and procedures.
- Must be physically fit and able to work outdoors in the heat for up to 8 hours at a time (please note the boats have a canopy so captains won’t be in direct sun).
- Proven experience as a boat captain or in a similar maritime leadership role with management responsibilities is preferred.
Compensation:
- $30/hour in addition to tips and the freedom of a flexible schedule.
