Position Overview:

The High Energy Density Science Division at SLAC National Accelerator Laboratory invites applications for an experimental research associate to join a pioneering research team studying how radiation-induced effects impact the phonon properties of high-entropy alloys. These alloys are featured by unique transport and mechanical properties, making them attractive for use as the first-wall materials for nuclear fusion reactors. Our goal is to validate fundamental modeling of these materials under extreme fusion plasma environments. This research will conduct a new class of pump-probe experiments capable of characterizing materials¿ behavior with atomic-scale temporal and spatial resolution. Responsibilities include the design of experiments at LCLS, perform experimental characterization, and data analysis and dissemination of the results. Priority activities include comparisons with theoretical molecular dynamics modeling of the material response.

Given the nature of the position, SLAC is open to on-site and hybrid work options.

Specific Responsibilities Include But Are Not Limited To:

  • Lead Experimental Efforts: Design, execute, and analyze experiments using ultrafast electron diffraction (UED) and X-ray Free Electron Laser (XFEL) to investigate the ultrafast materials behavior of alloys implanted with radiation effects.
  • Collaborative Research: Work closely with a multidisciplinary team of scientists at SLAC and Stanford University to advance the understanding of fusion materials.
  • Data Analysis: Utilize advanced computational tools for data interpretation and contribute to the development of new methodologies.
  • Publication and Communication: Prepare research findings for publication in peer-reviewed journals and present results at conferences and workshops.

Qualifications:

Note: The Research Associate role is a fixed term staff position. This is a 24 months fixed-term appointment with the possibility of extension. Assignment duration is contingent upon project needs and funding.

Applicants must provide evidence of either a recently completed PhD degree or confirmation of completion of the PhD degree requirements prior to starting the position. Applicants should also include a cover letter, a statement of research area including brief summary of accomplishments, a curriculum vitae, a list of publications, and names of three references for future letters of recommendation with the application.

Qualifications:

  • Ph.D. in material science, engineering, physics, applied physics, or related fields.
  • Ph.D. level expertise in material science and plasma physics, with demonstrated knowledge in performing independent experimental research.
  • Effective communication and writing skills to prepare and present technical and scientific documentation.
  • Demonstrated record of scientific productivity through high-impact journal publications.
  • Demonstrated ability to work and communicate effectively with a diverse population.
  • Demonstrated ability to carry out independent research and be able to collaborate in a team environment.
  • Prior experience with irradiation damage and nanofab-relevant techniques (e.g. TEM, SEM, FIB) is a strong plus.

SLAC Competencies:

  • Effective Decisions: Uses job knowledge and solid judgment to make quality decisions in a timely manner.
  • Self-Development: Pursues a variety of venues and opportunities to continue learning and developing.
