Responsibilities

The Cryogenic Division at SLAC National Accelerator Laboratory is seeking an Accelerator Technologist III - Cryogenics Plant Operator to support the operation of the Cryogenic Plant (2.0K Helium Refrigeration System) that is part of the LCLS Superconducting Linear Accelerator. You will work under general supervision or under advisement from higher level Accelerator Technologists and perform assignments of intermediate to advanced complexity in instrumentation & controls work and one or more technical areas of mechanical, refrigeration/vacuum, electrical/electronics, etc. all of which are part of the cryogenics plant operator skillsets.

The Technologist III is highly proficient and will independently plan and conduct a block of work as a complete project under managerial oversight, or as a portion of a larger and more diverse project, with strict adherence to site-specific safety as well as work planning and control (WPC). The Accelerator Technologist will be in charge ensuring efficient use of resources and monitoring target dates.

Given the nature of this position, SLAC will require onsite work.

Job Duties

Specific job duties include but are not limited to:

  • Install, maintain, troubleshoot, repair, and calibrate all types of industrial and commercial grade instruments including sensing elements, transmitters, pneumatic and electronic controllers, transducers, and control valves.
  • Use a wide variety of tools and equipment, such as various hand tools, portable electronic test equipment, calibration, and maintenance tools.
  • Maintain, calibrate, diagnose, and repair control system components including programmable logic controllers (PLC), computers, and communication networks.
  • Perform preventative maintenance and functional analysis of control systems.
  • Perform work by following existing operational & Safety procedures and standards; successful completion of required training and applied adherence in the field.
  • Monitor and perform adjustments to control functions for optimal cryogenics system specifications, availability, and efficiency.
  • Maintain equipment operating records and log sheets.
  • Operate and diagnose complex cryogenic system equipment and solve process problems; capable of independent decision making.
  • Collaborate with experimenters, engineers, physicists, and other groups on the design, installation, modification, and performance of cryogenic systems.
  • Perform tests and precision specification measurements on system components and multiple utility support systems.
  • Become proficient and improve multiple operator skills sets; seek thorough understanding of Instrumentation & Controls, mechanical tech and electrical/electronics principles and hardware.
  • Work schedule may include overtime hours, off-shift, weekends & holiday schedules.

Note: Technologist III is expected to have proficiency to perform intermediate to advanced complexity assignments across multiple disciplines /skills.

Qualifications

  • H.S./GED or vocational school apprenticeship, plus three years of laboratory or industrial mechanical/electrical experience can be substituted. College, Technical degree, or military training, preferred.
  • Demonstrated electrical-mechanical aptitude and ability to perform intermediate to advanced complexity controls/instrumentation job duties.
  • Ability to read and interpret instrument, piping, electrical and electronic drawings, and sketches.
  • Technical knowledge of industrial equipment operation & repair. Requires a practical working knowledge of a broad range of fields and equipment such as thermal transfer & isolation, electrical laws, instrumentation & controls, pneumatics, hydraulics, and high-pressure gas systems.
  • The ability to use a wide variety of hand & power tools.
  • The candidate should be familiar with site environmental and safety rules, regulations, and requirements, and be trained to handle, store, and dispose of hazardous materials appropriately.
  • Demonstrated use of solid math skills & computer proficiency.
  • Demonstrated understanding and ability to control the helium cryogenic process.
  • Demonstrated ability to install, maintain, calibrate, and diagnose pneumatic and electronic instruments and control loops: ability to read and understand PLC Ladder Logic
  • Demonstrated knowledge and experience in multiple cryogenics technical operator skillsets such as Instrumentation & Controls, Gas Process, and electrical/electronic principles and hardware.
  • Requires sufficient skills, knowledge, and ability to work independently with little to no supervision and occasionally alone on shift.
  • Able to effectively communicate technical issues with senior engineers, operators, tech support personnel, vendors, and others in a diverse multicultural environment.
  • Must possess a valid driver¿s license to drive vehicles on site.

This position is represented by SEIU Local 2007 and the collective bargaining agreement between the university and SEIU Local 2007 governs the terms and conditions of employment.

The expected pay range for this position is $57.40 (Step 1) - $69.59 (Step 10) per hour. Placement in the range is subject to the applicable Collective Bargaining Unit. SLAC National Accelerator Laboratory/Stanford University provides pay ranges representing its good faith estimate of what the university reasonably expects to pay for a position. The pay offered to a selected candidate will be determined based on factors such as (but not limited to) the scope and responsibilities of the position, the qualifications of the selected candidate, departmental budget availability, internal equity, geographic location and external market pay for comparable jobs.
