About the Lloyd Sealy Library The Lloyd Sealy Library is a preeminent, dedicated criminal justice library with comprehensive collections of historical and contemporary materials. We support a liberal arts curriculum for our undergraduate students, in partnership with other CUNY libraries. Our collections are an indispensable resource for faculty and students at John Jay and across CUNY, as well as scholars, practitioners and members of the criminal justice and legal communities around the world. The Library holds unique special collections directly related to the mission of the College. Through its collections, technology, physical and virtual spaces, and our expert faculty and staff, the Library provides students and faculty an inclusive and welcoming environment to support and enhance the learning, teaching, and research needs of the college. POSITION OVERVIEW The Lloyd Sealy Library at John Jay College of Criminal Justice of the City University of New York (CUNY) seeks a Web and User Experience Librarian to lead and direct our digital presence, commencing in late August 2026. This is a faculty position. The candidate would be appointed at the rank of Instructor or Assistant Professor. The successful candidate will manage the Library’s website and digital communications. They will work collaboratively with colleagues from all areas of the Library and other stakeholders to identify Library and user needs, and ensure communications are accurate, effective, consistent and accessible. They will participate fully in the Library’s reference and instruction program. All our Library faculty teach and provide reference services and have responsibility for specific Library functions. Candidates are expected to bring enthusiasm and demonstrated commitment to teaching and to develop and maintain an active research and publication agenda. The successful candidate must be eager and qualified to work with our diverse student body. The successful candidate will be flexible, able to work collaboratively and independently and balance multiple tasks and responsibilities as assigned, including departmental and institutional committee assignments, and be able to adapt to shifting needs and priorities. They will have significant knowledge of current library trends and technologies, standards and best practices, and the intention to stay up to date through professional development, engagement with the profession, and/or through their own academic research. Our librarians have faculty status and are required to develop and maintain an active research and publication agenda. Earning tenure requires evidence of effective research and scholarly publishing, service and teaching. Library faculty are covered by the PSC CUNY labor contract. This position reports to the Chief Librarian. Responsibilities include, but are not limited to: 1. Library’s website Be responsible for the content, functionality, accessibility and usability of the Library website, currently on the Springshare platform. Work closely with the IT Academic Applications Director and serve as primary liaison to the platform vendor for technical issues. Create workflows incorporating ongoing collaboration with Library faculty to ensure veracity and accuracy of website content. Manage the Library’s social media, blogs and marketing and promotion of Library events and resources. Advise library colleagues on best practices for creating web content. Make evidence-based changes based on usability testing and current web usability research. Collaborate with college educational technologists to ensure effective library presence on the college learning management system (Brightspace). 2. Reference services and teaching Provide reference services in-person and virtually, and teach information literacy one-shot classes and workshops, in person and virtual, for undergraduate and graduate students. Collaborate with the information literacy librarian to create digital tools to support learning. 3. Additional assignments Provide excellent customer service in support of our community. Participate in a work culture that promotes diversity, equity, and inclusion. Actively participate in relevant committees and working groups to establish shared goals, practices and policies in collaboration with colleagues within the Library, the college and across the university. Actively pursue their own research agenda and publish to earn tenure. Be prepared to work occasional weekend and/or evening hours if required. Take on additional projects and tasks as the Library’s needs evolve. QUALIFICATIONS For appointment at the rank of instructor, a Master's in Library Science (MLS), Master's in Library Information Studies (MLIS), or closely related discipline from an ALA-accredited institution. An instructor is required to complete a second graduate degree within 5 years to advance to assistant professor rank. For a degree at CUNY, tuition benefits are available (6 credits per fall/spring semester). Also required is the ability to work with others for the good of the institution. For appointment at the rank of Assistant Professor, a second graduate degree is required in addition to a Master's in Library Science (MLS), Master's in Library Information Studies (MLIS), or closely related discipline from an ALA-accredited institution. The successful candidate must have potential for scholarly productivity and have the ability to work with others for the good of the institution. PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS Demonstrated experience in creating and maintaining websites following current best practices using Springshare suite of tools or similar platform. Skills in applying best practices and current standards to website and other digital content, including accessibility. Effective oral, written and interpersonal communication skills, able to write clearly and concisely with experience in creating online content. Experience with a college learning management system (e.g. Brightspace). Ability to teach, in person and online. Aptitude for and interest in information technologies. Aptitude for and interest in working in a collaborative environment. Ability to prioritize and manage multiple projects and responsibilities as they arise, and exercise flexibility. Adaptability and curiosity, with a growth mindset. COMPENSATION Salary range for Instructor: $52,612 - $76,616; Salary range for Assistant Professor: $57,252 - $94,909 CUNY offers faculty a competitive compensation and benefits package covering health insurance, pension and retirement benefits, paid parental leave, and savings programs.
