The Skirball Cultural Center seeks an experienced Security and Safety Director to lead the organization-wide security program. Reporting to the Senior Vice President of Operations, this position will manage Skirball and contracted security staff and ensure the security of the institution’s assets, facilities, and grounds and the safety of its staff and visitors. This role will also be responsible for advising leadership on high-level security issues and safety concerns.
Starting salary range: $110,000-120,000
Responsibilities:
- Manage the development and implementation of security policies, standards, and procedures to ensure ongoing security relative to asset protection, workplace violence prevention, emergencies, access control systems, video surveillance, and employee education
- Oversee the implementation, updating, and testing of safety and disaster preparedness programs, policies, and procedures; provide relevant staff education; oversee regular security drills and training sessions to educate staff and volunteers about security, safety, and disaster preparedness; manage and train disaster response teams
- Perform managerial duties; oversee Site Managers and vendors; interview applicants; assign and review assignment progress; manage performance; develop higher levels of expertise in team members by encouraging further education, participation in seminars, and providing learning opportunities within the department
- Provide management oversight and mentorship to Site Managers in their direct supervision of officers, including recruitment, hiring, onboarding, development, management, training and discipline; investigate complaints; maintain manual and electronic records (e.g., background information, personnel files, applicant tracking), ensuring compliance with regulatory requirements and established guidelines
- Design security deployment for daily and special event activities; consult and collaborate with relevant departments to define security needs for exhibitions, including reviewing layout in advance of installation, ensuring security of shipments and receipt of art works, reviewing indemnification specifications from lending institutions to ensure security requirements are met, and recommending necessary changes to security devices and/or procedures
- Respond to and investigate security breaches; assist with disciplinary and legal matters associated with such breaches
- Ensure compliance with OSHA and other related regulations, including preparation and submission of required reports
- Maintain file of hazardous materials and procedures for handling a mishap
- Create and manage Security budget, ensuring expenditures comply with approvals; recommend salary increases
- Help identify and select outside contractors to provide security services; manage related contracts; work with outside consultants for independent security audits
- Assess and determine parking and delivery challenges; coordinate contract uses of parking lots including shuttle use, parking attendants, and valet services; provide parking and traffic directional plans for large events that maximize parking resources
- Oversee members of the Security team in monitoring on-site security equipment to ensure proper operation and maintenance
- Recommend and oversee planning, evaluation, enhancement, purchase, and testing of new and existing security systems, technology, and devices; oversee the implementation of new equipment/devices and their integration with existing systems
- Work with management to identify appropriate protection goals, objectives, and metrics
- Establish and maintain strong collaborative relationships with public agencies regarding the Skirball’s position in the community; develop and maintain effective working relationships with local law enforcement agencies
- Develop and maintain security skills through participation in workshops, further education, and professional literature
Qualifications, Experience, and Attributes:
- Degree in criminal justice or related discipline or equivalent training
- More than 5 years of experience as senior security, public safety, or military staff with supervisory responsibility
- Knowledge of the security policies and practices in museums, including business continuity planning, disaster planning, risk management, security and law enforcement policies and procedures, crime prevention, investigations, and public safety training
- Managerial experience; ability to manage subordinate supervisors and staff members
- Experience negotiating and managing security contracts
- Strong oral and written communication skills; ability to manage and lead a team and to communicate security-related concepts to Skirball staff
- Knowledge of pertinent law and the law enforcement community
- Ability to work in high-pressure situations, make decisions rapidly, and exercise sound judgment and discretion
- Valid California driver’s license
- Physical ability to spend substantial time standing/walking and to lift up to 50 pounds
- Preferred: bachelor’s degree, bilingual (English/Spanish), firearms training and relevant permits, experience working in the Jewish community and/or anti-terrorism/hate crime experience
