The role of BIM Standards Lead requires leadership, management and collaboration with fellow BIM Leads across the firm to advance the firm towards the goal of increasing efficiencies in design workflows and enhancing the quality of BIM deliverables through standardization, training, quality control programs and research of new technologies and workflows. The position is a key leader within Design Technology and functions as an integrator of design and engineering disciplines and the Office of Technology through BIM standardization. Position Responsibilities Defines, plans, develops, manages and implements standards, assets, guidelines, best-practices and workflows related to BIM content production by engaging project-focused BIM Leads/Managers, discipline leaders and computation design subject matter experts, as well as other Design Technology leaders, etc. for firm-wide use. Develops and executes BIM asset standardization and BIM data management strategies for projects of various types, phases and scales. Identifies, categorizes and organizes BIM assets & standards specific to Project scale from office-wide and firm-wide scale through close collaboration with BIM Leads/Managers from all offices. Develops training plans, materials and exams for SOM's BIM standards and best practices and maps them to staff Revit skill levels in collaboration with regional BIM Leads. In collaboration with regional BIM Leads, create new hire skills assessments and onboarding related to Design Technology and firm-wide resources. Identifies and assists with the development of tools to monitor, track and course-correct BIM content for standard compliance by collaborating with BIM Leads/Managers and Application & Data Engineering Team. Defines and maintains standard Project LOD Matrices and BIM Management Plans in close collaboration with project-focused BIM Leads/Managers, Project Managers and other Project Team leaders. Maintains comprehensive documentation of standard assets and workflows. In support of training the trainers, organizes and conducts initial training sessions to promote BIM standards, best practices and related tools/workflows as part of program roll-outs. Identifies, evaluates and presents possible productivity gains to be made with systematization, automation and standardization. Contributes to tools and processes related to project specifications, tracking of material lists, energy, water and carbon use intensities on Projects. Leads organization, management and maintenance of BIM and other related resources in collaboration with the Office of Technology. Keeps informed of industry standards, trends and developments related to BIM practices. Performs quality assurance testing of new tools related to BIM or asset management. Manages planning, development and advancement of innovative ideas/solutions to support BIM workflow. Coordinates such development with other Design Technology subject matter experts. Manages external parties to develop standard content or custom tool development within the framework and infrastructure defined by Office of Technology; Manages change, adoption and integration of new standard or workflow into existing BIM workflows. Leadership Responsibilities Manages a collaborative relationship with BIM Leads/Managers, discipline subject matter experts, Librarians and other knowledge resources to ensure that BIM standard assets and workflows are coordinated, integrated, and support the performance goals of project delivery as well as SOM’s other technology visions. Develops and implements strategies to position and maintain SOM as a leader in BIM services and Project delivery. Co-leads and organizes regular firm-wide BIM Leadership meetings with regional BIM and Design Technology Leads. Engages in talent strategy to find specialists, leaders, and future professionals for the firm. Keeps informed of security risks in tools and processes, and data management strategies through close collaboration with the Office of Technology. Creates and drives new ways of working through contributing to the development of services, standards, procedures based in an understanding of the business principles that protect SOM from financial and legal risk. Effectively communicates and promotes the work of the firm. Minimum Qualifications Completion of a professional degree in Architecture or a related field. Minimum 10 years of focused professional experience in applying and developing digital tools and processes to AEC project work, including experience in Revit to document a variety of large-scale building projects. Demonstrates attention to detail and consistency in model-building, data-organization, and drawing set-up with a graphical style that is clear, consistent and artful. General knowledge of architectural practice including site-planning, civil, structural, mechanical, electrical engineering, and construction. Demonstrated knowledge of architectural design, documentation, detailing, building materials, construction techniques, building systems selection, related engineering principles and building codes. Wide knowledge of concepts, workflows and tools used in other Digital Design fields such as Computational Design, Performance Analysis/Simulation, Visualization, etc. General understanding of sustainable strategies and principles including familiarity with LEED or other green building rating systems. Demonstrated expertise in digital tools such as Revit, BIM360, Dynamo, Navisworks, AutoCAD, energy modeling, LCA tools and related scripting languages. Demonstrated understanding and knowledge of scripting, programming, Grasshopper, Rhino and their relationship to BIM workflow. Demonstrated experience in data visualization and ability to create engaging visual communication. Demonstrates proficiency in Rhino, parametric and rendering software, Adobe Suite, and Google Workspace. LEED or other green building accreditation preferred.
