What are the responsibilities and job description for the Environmental Assistant position at Skagway Traditional Council?
Duties & Responsibilities:
The Environmental Technician (ET) is responsible for assisting with programs managed by the Environmental Department. The ET is responsible for, but not limited to the following:
· Mitigating invasive plant populations through mechanical removal and cultural control.
· Calibrating, setting up, and breaking down air quality monitoring equipment, and managing data.
· Assisting with field sampling including water quality, harmful algal blooms, shellfish, and anadromous fish.
· Helping to develop programs that address priority environmental issues.
· Other duties as assigned.
Qualifications:
Minimum Qualifications Include:
· Must be at least 18 years of age.
· High school diploma required, some college or associate degree preferred.
· Flexibility to work weekends and other hours as needed, and ability to work independently.
· Kind & compassionate demeaner, ability to deal with the public pleasantly.
· Strong organizational and verbal communication skills.
· Experience with Microsoft Office software and basic computer operation.
· Ability to follow strict field protocol and calibration instructions.
· Plant identification a plus, but training will be provided.
Working Conditions:
This position may require you to lift up to 50 pounds, sit or stand for up to eight hours, access sites through uneven terrain in all weather conditions up to two miles by foot, operate a pedal-powered e-Bike, use scientific equipment for monitoring multiple environmental parameters, and handle tools such as pruners and weed whackers. This work is primarily performed outdoors, proper protective clothing must be worn at all times. The Skagway Traditional Council has several employees who share space at the Skagway Traditional Council Community Center and work together on events and program development. The Skagway Traditional Council is run by a 5-member board that also utilizes the facilities in the Community Center. Typical office hours are scheduled 8am-4pm Monday-Friday.

Pay: $18.00 - $21.00 per hour
