Summary
This position is responsible for performing all stages of the powder coating process, including surface preparation, coating application, curing, and final inspection. The technician ensures parts meet customer and work-order specifications while maintaining equipment, following safety procedures, and supporting production flow. This role requires mechanical aptitude, attention to detail, and the ability to work efficiently in a fast-paced shop environment.
Essential Functions
1. Set up, operate, and adjust powder coating guns, booths, ovens, and related equipment.
2. Complete accurate color changes following contamination-prevention procedures.
3. Prep parts for powder coating, including washing, pre-treating, sanding, masking, plugging, taping, and hanging/racking.
4. Load and unload parts manually, via team lift, or by forklift.
5. Push loaded carts in and out of booths, prep areas, and ovens safely.
6. Apply powder coating according to work orders, blueprints, and customer specifications.
7. Inspect parts throughout all production stages for proper coverage, finish, adhesion, and conformance.
8. Troubleshoot coating defects and perform or recommend rework.
9. Review and interpret work orders, blueprints, and instructions.
10. Track, record, and document job details in the computer system.
11. Clean and maintain spray guns, equipment, booths, and work areas with proper cleaning agents.
12. Perform basic preventative/predictive maintenance on powder and wash equipment.
13. Follow 5S housekeeping standards and maintain an organized workspace.
14. Operate forklifts safely to move materials, parts, and finished jobs.
15. Safely operate valves, switches, temperature settings, and pressure controls.
16. Assist with general labor tasks to support workflow.
17. Provide suggestions for continuous improvement.
18. Train or assist in training new team members when assigned.
Competencies
1. Ability to pass a respirator fit test and wear all required PPE.
2. Ability to pass forklift certification and operate forklifts safely.
3. Ability to read, write, and speak English; bilingual Spanish a plus.
4. Ability to differentiate colors, textures, gloss levels.
5. Mechanical aptitude and ability to visualize coating coverage and part geometry.
6. Strong organizational, prioritization, and time-management skills.
7. Strong tape-measure skills and understanding of basic math and fractions.
8. Ability to lift 50 pounds and push/pull 100 pound carts.
9. Ability to work in varied temperatures, dust, humidity, and around airborne particles.
10. Ability to follow written and verbal instructions.
11. Ability to maintain order separation and track parts accurately.
12. Knowledge of pressure washer systems (preferred).
13. Knowledge of powder coating equipment and processes (preferred).
14. Attention to detail, thoroughness, and quality craftsmanship.
15. Effective communication and teamwork skills.
16. Hardworking, trustworthy, humble, and adaptable.
17. Strong safety awareness and compliance.
Supervisory Responsibility
This position has no supervisory responsibilities.
Work Environment
This job operates in a shop environment. This role routinely uses compressed air and washing/pre-treating equipment, powered hand tools, forklifts, respirators, required PPE. Exposure to the elements including varied temperatures and humidity.
Physical Demands
This is a physical role. This requires regularly lifting, bending, reaching, squatting, kneeling, and standing for long periods. Must be able to stand for 8-12 hours a day.
Position Type and Expected Hours of Work
This is a full-time position. Days and hours of work are Monday through Thursday, 5:45 am – 4:15 pm. Over-time hours and some weekend days as necessary.
Travel
No travel is expected for this position.
Required Education and Experience
1. General education
2. 1 year quality control and laborer experience
3. 1 year forklift experience
Preferred Education and Experience
1. 2 years powder coating experience.
2. Experience with parts prepping, masking, or materials handling.
3. Advanced knowledge of powder equipment or pressure washer systems.
4. Experience with powder coating application using many brands, colors, textures, gloss levels and multi-stage applications preferred.
