The role of a Traffic Control Plan Drafter involves creating and designing traffic control plans for various projects, ensuring compliance with regulations and standards. The Traffic Control Drafter supports the preparation of site-specific traffic control plans for overhead and underground utility construction projects. Work typically includes drafting traffic control layouts, incorporating agency standards, and preparing drawings for permitting submittals. This role involves close coordination with traffic engineers and the internal permitting team to address agency comments and process requested revisions. The position is well suited for individuals with strong drafting skills using Rapid Plan who are developing their expertise in traffic design and construction phasing, with a focus on safety, efficiency, and community needs.
Roles and Responsibilities:
- Drafting and designing traffic control plans for roadway, construction, and special event projects.
- Preparing traffic control plans in accordance with MUTCD guidelines for streets and highways.
- Creating clear and accurate drawings for lane closures, work zones, and pedestrian management.
- Collaborating with project managers, clients, and field crews to ensure safe and efficient layouts.
- Reviewing plans to ensure compliance with local jurisdiction requirements.
- Maintaining organized project files and revisions.
- Assisting with planning layouts for traffic control equipment and barricade placement.
- Review permit request information, construction plans, and scopes of work to determine appropriate traffic control requirements.
- Prepare site-specific traffic control plans for a variety of projects, including overhead and underground utility construction.
- Apply applicable standards, agency requirements, and MUTCD guidelines in the development of traffic control plans.
- Coordinate with field crews, construction supervisors, and project teams to develop practical and effective traffic control solutions.
- Revise traffic control plans in response to agency comments and field conditions.
- Support permitting efforts by providing traffic control exhibits and responding to agency review comments.
- Maintain organized and accurate electronic drawing files and documentation.
- Perform other duties and projects as assigned.
Success Factors:
- Advanced proficiency in Rapid Plan software.
- High school diploma or equivalent required.
- Demonstrated understanding of regional and local traffic control standards.
- Solid knowledge of agency project review processes, permitting requirements, and traffic control regulations.

Experience and Education:
- Minimum of two (2) years of experience in traffic control planning or related work.

Additional Requirements/Licenses/Certifications:
- Possession of, or ability to obtain, a valid State of Residence Driver’s License is required within two weeks of employment.
- Candidates must pass criminal and Motor Vehicle Record (MVR) background checks and pass a pre-employment drug screen.
