Qualifications:
- Ability to perform work involving physical strength and endurance
- Ability to withstand exposure to variable weather conditions
- Ability to work from ladder or scaffolding
- Ability to follow directions, oral and written
- Ability to use backhoe, front-end loader, etc.
- At least three years’ experience using groundskeeping and/or farm related equipment
- Knowledge of shrubs, grasses, fertilizers, insecticides and soils
- Valid Florida Commercial Driver’s License or ability to obtain upon employment
- Must obtain limited lawn and ornamental license within one (1) year of hire
Preferred Qualifications:
- High school diploma or equivalent
*Such alternatives to the above qualifications as the superintendent may find appropriate.
PERFORMANCE RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Observes all safe practices when using tools, equipment, and chemicals.
- Works effectively with, cooperates with, and supports other employees.
- Performs tasks with minimal supervision.
- Maintains records as directed by the Plant Operations Manager.
- Maintains and cares for school grounds.
- Prepares areas for seeding and/or planting shrubs, plants, seeds, sets out shrubbery, prunes trees and trims hedges to improve appearance of grounds.
- Cultivates and cleans away weeds around shrubs.
- Mows lawns with hand mowers and/or tractors.
- Waters grass and plants as directed.
- Treats plants with insecticide or fungicide as directed.
- Adjusts, sharpens blades, services and makes minor repairs on lawn mowers or tractors.
- Spreads fertilizer on grass or shrubs as prescribed.
- Fills holes on grounds.
- Hauls refuse to dump.
- Sprays weed killer at fence lines, etc. as directed.
- Assists in moving furniture and equipment from school to school.
- Drives school board vehicles.
- Completes reports on duties performed at work sites.
- Takes appropriate action to correct safety deficiencies.
- Patches blacktop in the district’s parking lots.
- Operates the tractor with front end loader and backhoe or box blades.
- Performs other job-related functions as may be assigned.
