LEAD AFTERCARE TEACHER


What We Do  

Sitar Arts Center engages DC youth, from early childhood to young adulthood, in building a creative community of learning and belonging that removes financial and cultural barriers to arts education and career training. 


What You’ll Do   
Sitar Arts Center is seeking an experienced Lead Aftercare Teacher to work in partnership with camp counselors, camp assistants, faculty, and staff to support young people in Camp Sitar this June – July 2026.      


Camp Sitar provides visual, performing, digital art, and movement classes over six weeks to kindergarten - 8th graders in our full-day program.     


The Lead Aftercare Teacher ensures that all students in Camp Sitar’s Aftercare program are engaged and supported in aftercare activities from 4:30–6:00 p.m., Monday-Friday. Each aftercare group is divided by age range and matched with a Summer Camp Counselor. The Lead Aftercare Teacher oversees Camp Sitar Aftercare and is responsible for supervising and matching Camp Counselors and Camp Assistants in aftercare programming. 

This position is supervised by the Director of Community Arts Education. 


Responsibilities Include    

  • Supervise Camp Counselors and Camp Assistants as they transition from their daily Camp Sitar role to Aftercare role
  • Plan and prepare age-appropriate activities for Camp Counselors and Camp Assistants to facilitate and support positive youth development strategies in the different aftercare areas
  • Ensure all students in aftercare are in their correct rooms, and students are regrouped by age as families pick up their children
  • Fill the role of a substitute Camp Counselor as needed during aftercare hours
  • Facilitate the pickup of students between the hours of 4:30–6 p.m. using Sitar’s walkie-talkie system
  • Organize pre/post camp preparation, planning, storage, cleaning, as well as snacks for class distribution by Camp Counselors and Camp Assistants
  • Supervise and ensure camp students' safety during aftercare time, in and outside of classes, snack time, activities, transitions, and during outside play



What You’ll Earn      
Pay is hourly, $27 per hour, based on experience.    

 

When You'll Work
This six-week part-time position is seasonal, with a start date of June 22, 2026.  The Lead Aftercare Teacher position will work 15 hours per week, with hours scheduled Monday-Friday between 3:30 pm and 6:30 pm, depending on staffing needs. Camp Program Dates are June 22 – July 31, 2026.   


Other Required Work Dates will be provided before employment acceptance. All required work dates are paid, including:    

  • Classroom Management Training 
  • Camp Orientations and Training/Camp Preparation

Key Qualifications and Experience      

  • Two or more years of experience working with children and youth.   
  • Interest and/or experience in arts and/or arts education.   
  • Previous experience working in a camp setting.    

 

Preferred Qualifications and Experience   

  • Bilingual - Spanish/English   
  • Knowledge, practice, and experience with differentiated instruction, equity, accessibility, and anti-racism
