Position Summary
The Senior Accountant / Payroll Manager is responsible for overseeing all payroll operations while supporting the Controller with advanced general accounting functions. This role ensures accurate financial reporting, regulatory compliance, and strong internal controls, and provides leadership to the payroll team.
Essential Functions – General Accounting
- Review, analyze, and reconcile general ledger accounts; investigate and explain variances.
- Prepare and post month-end and year-end journal entries.
- Reconcile daily cash receipts to bank and general ledger balances and monitor daily cash positions.
- Review and finalize monthly bank reconciliations for accuracy and completeness.
- Prepare financial statements, supporting schedules, and proof reports.
- Maintain and reconcile fixed asset schedules.
- Prepare inventory cost adjustments.
- Prepare monthly operating expense variance analysis.
- Assist with annual budgeting and forecast schedules.
- Assist with year-end financial audits and insurance renewals.
- Act as backup for initiating and approving wire and ACH transactions.
- Prepare ad hoc financial reports and analyses as requested.
Essential Functions – Payroll
- Oversee and supervise a two-person payroll team, ensuring accurate and timely payroll processing.
- Ensure compliance with all federal, state, and local payroll, wage, and hour regulations.
- Review payroll processes and systems to improve efficiency, accuracy, and internal controls.
- Monitor 401(k) activity for compliance and coordinate related audits.
- Partner with IT to understand and implement commission and compensation changes.
- Facilitate internal and external audits, including Workers’ Compensation.
- Evaluate and recommend enhancements to payroll systems, software, and procedures.
- Collaborate with HR personnel to develop, analyze, and deliver workforce reports.
Leadership & Supervision
- Provide training, guidance, and performance feedback to payroll staff.
- Conduct timely and constructive performance evaluations.
- Promote continuous improvement and cross-functional collaboration.
Competencies & Qualifications
- Proficiency with ADP payroll systems.
- Proficiency in Payroll Administration and Payroll Management
- Strong knowledge of payroll operations, payroll taxes, and internal controls.
- Solid understanding of general accounting principles.
- Advanced analytical, organizational, and problem-solving skills.
- Excellent written, verbal, and interpersonal communication skills.
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite (advanced Excel skills preferred).
- Strong analytical, organizational, and time-management skills
- Familiarity with payroll software and accounting systems
- Ability to work collaboratively and with attention to detail
- Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, or related field
- CPA a plus

Education Requirements
- Bachelor’s degree in accounting, Finance, Business Administration, or a related field required; equivalent combination of education and relevant experience may be considered.
Years of Experience
- 5–10 years of progressive experience in accounting and payroll functions, including hands- on responsibility for month-end close and general ledger activities.
