  • Four daily sections of Middle School Art, providing standards-based visual arts instruction in support of cross-curricular academic work

Our Approach to Art

Art at Valley Catholic Middle School is not an enrichment program or a traditional stand-alone elective. It is an intentional, standards-based component of our cross-curricular academic program.

The Art teacher works with students in four daily sections, providing explicit instruction in visual arts standards, concepts, techniques, and skills that students apply to work across their academic subjects. Art instruction supports the development of presentations, products, visual displays, models, and other forms of academic communication.

The successful candidate must understand the difference between asking students to make academic work visually appealing and explicitly teaching the artistic knowledge and skills students need to communicate ideas effectively through visual media.

The Art teacher collaborates with teachers across disciplines to identify the artistic skills students need for upcoming academic work and then provides intentional, standards-based instruction in those skills. The goal is not simply to incorporate art into other subjects. Rather, students receive systematic instruction in visual arts standards and learn to transfer those skills to authentic work throughout the curriculum.

Responsibilities

The successful candidate will:

  • Teach one section of 7th Grade Honors English, providing rigorous instruction in reading, writing, research, communication, and critical thinking.
  • Teach four daily sections of Middle School Art in support of cross-curricular academic learning.
  • Provide explicit, sequential instruction in visual arts concepts, techniques, vocabulary, and standards.
  • Systematically apply state visual arts standards within the established VCMS cross-curricular program.
  • Collaborate with English, Mathematics, Science, Social Studies, Religion, STEM, and other teachers to identify opportunities for meaningful application of visual arts standards.
  • Teach students the artistic skills needed to strengthen presentations, products, visual displays, models, and other academic work.
  • Develop students' skills in visual communication, composition, design, craftsmanship, presentation, and purposeful use of artistic elements.
  • Ensure that cross-curricular Art instruction remains grounded in identifiable visual arts standards rather than serving solely as enrichment or project-completion time.
  • Differentiate instruction to meet the needs of diverse learners.
  • Assess student learning and provide meaningful feedback in both Honors English and Art.
  • Build positive relationships with students and families.
  • Collaborate with colleagues in curriculum planning and school initiatives.
  • Contribute to the vibrant life of the school community.

Qualifications

Candidates must demonstrate meaningful preparation and experience in both English instruction and visual arts education.

For the Art component of this position, candidates should have:

  • Experience teaching visual art at the middle school and/or high school level.
  • Formal preparation in Art, Art Education, or a related field; or substantial relevant professional experience in visual art combined with demonstrated experience teaching art to adolescents.
  • Knowledge of visual arts standards and the ability to translate standards into intentional, age-appropriate instruction.
  • The ability to apply state visual arts standards to an existing cross-curricular academic program, rather than approaching Art solely as a traditional stand-alone or enrichment course.
  • Experience explicitly teaching artistic skills and concepts, not simply facilitating or supervising student art projects.
  • The ability to collaborate closely with teachers in other disciplines and translate upcoming academic projects into meaningful opportunities for standards-based visual arts instruction.
  • The ability to help students transfer artistic knowledge and skills from the Art classroom to presentations, products, and academic work throughout the curriculum.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Current Oregon Teaching License or ability to obtain one
  • Appropriate endorsement and/or demonstrated experience in Language Arts
  • Art or Art Education endorsement, degree, certification, or substantial relevant professional and teaching experience
  • Previous middle school and/or high school teaching experience
  • Experience teaching advanced or Honors-level English
  • Strong classroom management skills
  • Excellent communication and collaboration skills
  • Commitment to student-centered, standards-based learning
  • Support for the mission and values of Valley Catholic School

Successful completion of a background check and authorization to work in the United States are required. Valley Catholic School does not sponsor employment visas.
