Summary: The Regional Maternal Health Coordinator serves as the primary liaison between the hospital and surrounding healthcare facilities to coordinate obstetric (OB) deliveries, maternal transfers, and perinatal care planning. This role ensures safe, timely, and appropriate placement of pregnant and postpartum patients by facilitating communication, standardizing processes, and supporting regional collaboration across hospitals, clinics, EMS, and specialty providers. The coordinator plays a key role in improving maternal outcomes, optimizing resource utilization, and supporting regional maternal health initiatives. Moderate travel to surrounding facilities for meetings, outreach, or education may be required. General hours of work: Monday-Friday: days, may require availability during nights, weekends, or on-call rotation depending on service needs Education and/or Experience: Graduate from accredited school of Nursing with a minimum of 3–5 years of clinical experience in obstetrics, labor and delivery, maternal–fetal medicine, or perinatal nursing. Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) or Master’s degree preferred. Strong knowledge of maternal health risk stratification and levels of maternal care. Demonstrates ability to coordinate care across multiple departments and facilities. Excellent communication, organizational, and problem-solving skills. Experience in care coordination, transfer center operations, or regional healthcare collaboration. Familiarity with EMTALA, maternal transport guidelines, and perinatal quality initiatives. Bi-lingual experience preferred. Certificate, Licenses, Registrations: Licensed as a Registered Nurse in the State of Iowa and/or meeting the requirements of Multi-state licensure required. Leadership experience or certification in maternal or perinatal nursing (e.g., RNC-OB, C-EFM) preferred. CPR, ACLS, NRP required within 3 months of hire date. Additional certifications may be required to meet the patient care population needs. Essential Functions: Regional OB Coordination Responsible for coordination of obstetric deliveries and maternal transfers between the hospital and surrounding facilities, including critical access hospitals, clinics, and FQHCs. Oversees processes involving incoming and outgoing maternal and neonatal transfer requests and/or consultations. Ensure appropriate level-of-care placement based on maternal risk, gestational age, and clinical acuity. Collaborate with family medicine & OB providers, nursing leadership, maternal–fetal medicine specialists, anesthesia, neonatology, and service lines. Communication & Collaboration Maintain real-time communication with regional facilities and/or clinics if needed regarding bed availability, staffing, and service capabilities. Build and sustain strong working relationships with regional partners, including EMS and transport services. Participate in multidisciplinary case discussions for high-risk pregnancies or complex maternal conditions. Clinical & Operational Support Assist in the development, implementation, and maintenance of regional OB transfer and delivery protocols. Ensure compliance with hospital policies, EMTALA regulations, and state or federal maternal health guidelines. Support surge planning, diversion management, and emergent maternal events. Participate in on-call or after-hours coordination as required. Provides clinical assessment and care delivery for obstetrical patients and newborns as needed for an inpatient or outpatient encounter. Quality, Safety & Data Management Track and analyze maternal transfer and delivery data to identify trends, gaps, and communicate improvement opportunities. Participate in maternal morbidity and mortality reviews, case audits, and quality improvement initiatives. Support alignment with state or regional perinatal quality collaboratives (PQCs). Ensure care delivery is evidence-based across platforms and agencies. Education & Outreach Provide education and guidance to regional partners on referral pathways, risk assessment criteria, and maternal care standards. Serve as a resource for best practices in maternal and perinatal care coordination. Collaborate with other obstetrical leaders in education regarding all phases of maternal and newborn care.
