What are the responsibilities and job description for the Packaging Tech position at SingleSpeed Brewing Company?
The Brewery @ WonderBread is a 20 bbl production brewery situated in the renovated, historic WonderBread building in the heart of Waterloo, IA. In 2017 it began it’s life as a brewery when SingleSpeed Brewing Co. expanded from it’s original location in Cedar Falls, IA. In 2026 Backpocket Brewing and Peace Tree joined the party. Our unified goal is to have award winning beer distributed throughout the Midwest, with Iowa being at the heart of what we do. We have lofty goals, but no doubt that we can get there.
The Packaging Tech works with the Brewing Team and equipment that turns water, grain, yeast, hops and other carefully selected ingredients into beer. This includes a wide array of duties and will be both a challenging and fulfilling position. At the core is teamwork, attention to detail and brewing execution. The products and package types that we will take to market will continue to grow and evolve, and the entire Brewing Team will ensure that rigorously high standards for our beer are consistently met across all the board. This position could eventually be capable of handling “all things production related” at our Waterloo facility. ON A DAILY BASIS
- Operate, maintain and troubleshoot packaging machinery (canning line, keg filler)
- Perform daily cleaning and sanitizing of packaging equipment, including CIP procedures
- General cleaning of brewhouse/kegs/floors/etc
- Handle basic mechanical repairs to packaging equipment Inventory management for raw materials (cans, can lids, can trays, etc)
- Palletizing of finished product and warehousing
- Manage direct reports on production and packaging Quality assurance and control
- Follow and continually help refine SOPs Follow all safety procedures
ADDITIONAL RESPONSIBILITIES
- Oversee receipt of materials upon arrival at the brewery, and confirm purchase orders against actual goods received
- CIP of brewhouse and tanks
- Conduct maintenance of brewing equipment
- Sanitary yeast handling & pitching
- Fermentation monitoring, beer clarification, & dry hopping
- Beer transferring and filtering, cellaring, barrel aging, packaging, keg washing, and milling of grain
- Represent the brewery at various events
- Training and evaluating brewery personnel
- Assist with the scheduling of brewery staff
- Cleaning, upkeep, maintenance of brewing area
- Utilize the daily log of brewing operations
- Maintain brewery department's quality control standards
- Enforces brewery safety protocols and SOPs Perform QA/QC utilizing lab and sensory panel
- Operate forklift, pallet jack and/or other material handling equipment as needed
- Collaborate with fellow brewery staff on organization, cleanliness, QC, and general process refinement
DESIRED SKILLS AND EXPERIENCE
- Must be 21 years of age or older at the time of application
- Two or more years of brewery experience Knowledge and understanding of basic laboratory functions and microbiological concepts
- Strong communication, good team dynamics, and stellar planning and organizational skills
- Ability to work a schedule of (5) full 8-hour (or longer) workdays per week, with the flexibility to work nights or weekends as needed
- Highly organized individual who will take pride in maintaining a clean, wellfunctioning brewery
- Excellent communications skills: this position requires constant coordination with Operations and Brewery staff
- The desire to work in a fast-paced, growing company
PHYSICAL AND MENTAL REQUIREMENTS
- Able to be active for prolonged periods Able to read and follow written English instructions
- Able to stoop, crawl, twist, turn, lift, kneel, climb ladders and stairs
- Able to manipulate valves and clamps
- Able to regularly lift/carry 44 pound boxes
- Able to regularly lift/carry 55 pound bags above waist level
- Able to periodically lift/move 165 pounds
- Able to work in a factory/production environment which may be loud, slick, humid, and hot
- Able to comply with safe chemical handling procedures, including personal protection equipment such as gloves and goggles
- Basic Apple based computer skills (Numbers, Pages, Keynote)
