What are the responsibilities and job description for the SENIOR RESEARCH FELLOW position at Sinai Chicago?
General Summary/basic PURPOSE OF JOB:
The Senior Research Fellow will work under the supervision of the President of SUHI. The Fellow will function as an Epidemiologist IV, with all of the responsibilities of that job title, including participation on one or more SUHI Strategy teams and making contributes to project management, grant reporting, data analysis, publication in peer-reviewed journals and presentation of research findings to local and national audiences.
The Senior Fellow will have additional leadership and supervisory duties. Specifically, this individual may perform the following duties: (1) oversee the Research, Publications and Grants Workgroup, and (2) the associated administrative responsibilities for research quality, integrity and professional development (including publication, peer review and grant guidance; managing Works in Progress; protocols for project documentation and archiving; grant writing support), (3) interact with SHS leadership, and (4) collaborate regarding SUHI’s work with outside researchers and funders.
- With SUHI President, guides strategy and processes related to research and academic partnerships (including internships and fellowships) to leverage opportunity for SUHI (e.g. increased resources or research capacity, funding for collaborative and community-driven education and applied research).
- Explores use of teaching appointments and other training opportunities for networking and staff growth.
- Serves as an expert and liaison to internal and external groups, including advisory boards and committees, when it strategically advances SUHI or strategy. Serves as an expert and liaison to internal and external groups studying epidemiology and disease prevention/management.
- Initiates and pursues funding opportunities that align with SUHI priorities (including strategic plans, product line development, other funding development opportunities) and build on the research interests and capabilities of SUHI staff and research collaborators.
- Leads the process of writing grant proposals and supervises and/or mentors other staff in their quest to secure funding for research and intervention programs to address health disparities.
- Contributes own scientific research to SUHI, SHS, and the large scientific community.
- Directs the development of analytic plans and/or the use of methodological techniques, as well as the development and implementation of new data analysis projects. Supervises the design and implementation of surveys to collect new data for analysis as appropriate.
- Is proficient in the use of STATA, SAS, SPSS and other similar data analysis software to analyze data for complex research designs and/or intervention trials.
- Leads analyses of epidemiological data. Oversees, directs and advises other staff in statistical and epidemiological matters. Supervises staff in the design and implementation of methods to measure the effectiveness of programs and projects.
- Leads the process of writing articles summarizing research findings for publication in professional journals and supervises and/or mentors other staff in writing articles
- Manages own program budget. Tracks expenses and reports them to the Director/Manager of Grants and Operations and funder on a regular basis.
- Directly supervises junior staff. Oversees all project staff from his/her own project, in addition to specific Epidemiologists working on separate projects.
- Documents all aspects of own project/program. Facilitates replication in other communities by other researchers, etc. as applicable.
- Significantly contributes to the design and development of new projects and programs.
- Works with program staff, other professionals at Sinai Health System, and at the local, state and national level to increase awareness and support for programs.
- Mentors and/or oversees the Research, Publications and Grants Workgroup or alternative SUHI workgroup.
- Leads, oversees, and advises other staff in the dissemination of research findings to funders, community organizations, health care providers and academic societies
- Performs all other duties as assigned.
WHAT YOU WILL NEED
When promoting from within:
- Must have a PhD or DrPH for at least 10 years, accompanied by impactful and relevant work experience (SUHI and/or elsewhere) attaining funding and producing published health equity research with superior performance reviews.
- In addition, must meet the following criteria:
- Lead author on at least 15 papers published in peer-reviewed journals
- Lead author on a significant SUHI/Sinai published report for public dissemination
- Led the process of securing at least three (3) significant SUHI grants
- Have demonstrated leadership in running a large-scale program or research project and contributed to the leadership of SUHI.
When hiring externally:
- Must have a PhD or DrPH for at least 10 years, accompanied by impactful and relevant work experience (SUHI and/or elsewhere) attaining funding and producing published health equity research with superior performance reviews.
- In addition, must meet the following criteria:
1) Lead author on at least 15 papers published in peer-reviewed journals
2) Extensive experience presenting research for both academic and non-academic audiences
3) Proven ability to secure grant funding
4) Have demonstrated leadership in running large-scale programs or grants
KNOWLEDGE & SKILLS:
- Highly developed leadership skills
- Highly proficient knowledge of epidemiological and statistical methods used to assess morbidity and mortality data.
- Highly proficient knowledge of the principles and methods of epidemiological survey, research and analysis
- Highly proficient knowledge of statistical methods and of SAS, SPSS and other statistical software.
- Highly proficient skills in analyzing complex epidemiological issues and in recommending disease prevention intervention.
- Ability to lead in the writing of articles and epidemiological reports for professional journals.
