What are the responsibilities and job description for the SIMS UNIVERSITY INSTRUCTOR position at Sims Crane and Equipment?
Job Summary: The Sims University Instructor is responsible for creating and maintaining a learning environment that prepares and encourages students to develop and fulfill their potential within the Company.
Essential Functions:
- Prepare and deliver instructional activities that facilitate active learning experiences.
- Train students in the basic operations of commercial motor vehicles.
- Educate students in state/federal regulations for the operation of commercial motor vehicles.
- Utilize relevant technology to support instruction.
- Instruct and monitor students with the use of learning materials and equipment.
- Establish and communicate clear objectives for all learning activities.
- Prepare the classroom and range for class activities.
- Observe, evaluate, and provide appropriate feedback on student performance and development.
- Encourage and monitor the progress of individual students.
- Update all necessary records accurately and completely as required by laws, policies and school regulations.
- Manage student behavior in the classroom and on the range by enforcing rules and procedures.
- Maintain grades and attendance records of students.
- Maintain accurate and complete records of student progress and development.
- Adhere to specific published and/or presented timelines relative to teaching schedules (classroom and out-of-class), break periods, and start/end class times.
- Communicate necessary information regularly to students and members of management staff regarding student progress and student needs.
- Develop and implement interactive evaluation assessments.
- Administer performance assessments/evaluations as assigned.
- Coordinate and perform routine cargo delivery to other Sims branches.
Required Skills/Abilities:
- Exceptional commercial driving and training skills.
- Strong written and verbal communication skills.
- The ability to be flexible and professional with a Sims first attitude.
- Demonstrate effective instructional skills.
- Demonstrate patience and empathy with students to produce positive learning outcomes.
- Physical ability to operate a commercial motor vehicle, including entering, exiting, climbing, bending, or other physical activities required for safe operation of the CMV.
- Strong organizational skills to maintain and organize paperwork and records.
- Preparing clear, concise and informative reports for management.
- Strong understanding of all applicable federal, state and local rules and regulations.
- Possess general knowledge of all equipment.
- Strong aptitude for teamwork and fostering collaboration.
Minimum Requirements:
- High School Diploma or equivalent.
- 5 years of commercial vehicle driving experience.
- Prior instructor or educator experience preferred.
- Prior experience in training and curriculum development.
- Prior experience in heavy hauling and/or specialized heavy equipment preferred.
- Valid Commercial Driver’s License (Preferred).
- Must be legally authorized to work in the United States.
- Must be able to read, write, speak, and understand English.
Physical Requirements:

- Work is performed in a standard construction environment with prolonged periods of standing, sitting and/or walking. Subject to standing, walking, bending, reaching, stooping, and lifting objects up to 100 pounds at times. May occasionally be exposed to dangerous machinery, extreme noise and physical harm in areas requiring hard hats, safety glasses and steel-toed safety shoes.
- Ability to pass DOT pre-placement physical and physical capacities exam.
