Description

The Director of Field Education - West will oversee and manage educational initiatives within the division, with a primary focus on the Museum of Tolerance (MOT) and the Mobile Museum of Tolerance - California. This role ensures alignment with the Simon Wiesenthal Center (SWC) and MOT’s mission to combat hate, promote tolerance, and foster empathy through impactful programming. 

The Director will provide strategic leadership, develop innovative educational content, and manage a dedicated team to deliver high-quality educational experiences for diverse audiences. Emphasizing strategic planning, programmatic growth, and measurable outcomes, this role will expand the reach and impact of MOT programs and the Mobile Museum of Tolerance (MMOT) throughout California and beyond. 

 

Key Responsibilities 

Museum of Tolerance and Mobile Museum of Tolerance Operations 

  • Oversee daily operations of Museum of Tolerance educational initiatives including multi-faceted tours, educational programs, and events.
  • Direct oversight of the Mobile Museum of Tolerance - California, ensuring its programs address statewide needs and align with the Museum’s mission.
  • Collaborate with senior staff to develop and deliver impactful programming for the Museum of Tolerance and Mobile Museum of Tolerance, focusing on in-person, virtual, and hybrid educational experiences.
  • Expand the reach of MOT and MMOT by cultivating partnerships with schools, community organizations, and regional leaders throughout California.
  • Monitor and evaluate the success of MOT and MMOT programs using data-driven approaches and establish best practices for mobile education delivery. 

Educational Program Strategy and Management 

  • Develop and implement annual work plans for the Western Division, including MOT and MMOT, setting programmatic priorities, goals, and timelines.
  • Oversee key exhibition and educational initiatives (e.g. Combat Hate, Steps to Tolerance, Genesis at MOT)
  • Ensure high-quality program delivery by integrating innovative technologies and immersive learning experiences.
  • Establish and monitor key performance indicators (KPIs) to evaluate program success and reach.
  • Provide regular progress updates and impact reports to senior leadership and stakeholders. 

Strategic Planning and Capacity Building 

  • Develop strategies to enhance programmatic reach and capacity for both MOT and MMOT through staffing, resource allocation, and innovative content delivery.
  • Propose and implement pathways for new audience engagement and longitudinal plans aligned with the organization’s mission.  
  • Advise Museum leadership on programmatic trajectory, educational trends, and strategic initiatives for the Western Division. 

Development and Funding 

  • Collaborate with Development and Leadership teams to identify and secure funding opportunities for MOT and MMOT programs.
  • Prepare strategic proposals and align processes to meet grant deliverables and long-term growth objectives.
  • Serve as the primary representative for MOT and MMOT grant partners and donors, presenting funding proposals and impact reports. 

Outreach and Community Engagement 

  • Cultivate partnerships with local schools, nonprofits, museums, and corporations to enhance visibility and programmatic reach for MOT and MMOT.
  • Expand the scope of MMOT outreach initiatives, ensuring accessibility to underserved and diverse communities across California.
  • Maintain relationships with educators, community leaders, and policymakers to promote MOT and MMOT programs and resources. 

Team Leadership and Professional Development 

  • Lead, mentor, and manage a team of education professionals, including program managers, educators, and MMOT facilitators.
  • Foster a collaborative, professional team environment prioritizing clear communication and mutual accountability.
  • Conduct performance reviews and provide professional development opportunities for staff.
  • Organize team meetings to track progress on quarterly goals and address challenges proactively. 

 

Qualifications


Qualifications 

  • Minimum of 7 years of leadership experience in museum education, mobile education, curriculum design, or nonprofit program management.
  • Proven success in developing and implementing annual work plans and achieving quarterly objectives.
  • Experience managing mobile education initiatives or similar statewide programs.
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills, with experience fostering collaboration across teams and with stakeholders.
  • Demonstrated ability to manage programmatic budgets and ensure grant compliance.
  • Bachelor’s degree required; advanced degree in Museum Education, Art History, or a related field preferred.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite and virtual learning tools (e.g., Canvas, Zoom). 

Salary : $120,000 - $130,000
