We are looking for a highly motivated, hard-working student with an interest in science and medicine to become part of our neuroscience research team at Harvard Medical School. We conduct research on somatosensory circuits (responsible for the sense of touch and pain). We use a myriad of techniques in combination with mouse genetic tools to answer basic questions about how touch and pain are sensed in the skin and represented in the central nervous system.
This position job will provide an excellent experience in neuroscience research and allow the candidate to to understand how a science lab operates. No prior lab experience is required.
In this position, the candidate will learn and perform laboratory techniques such as mouse husbandry, PCR and gel electrophoresis, histology and immunostaining, microscopy, behavioral analyses, and accurate data recording/lab notebook maintenance. Initially, the candidate will be responsible for assisting a current lab member with their project. As the candidate demonstrates proficiency and efficiency in the lab, opportunities to work more independently will be available and encouraged. Ideal applicants will have the ability to contribute and progress in this position for a majority of their collegiate career.
Undergraduates from our lab are successful applicants to medical school and graduate school, and are occasionally authors on scientific publications.
IMPORTANT: This position involves a lot of time working with mice. Please take into serious consideration any allergies or aversion to working with mice prior to applying.
TIME COMMITMENT: You need to be available to work at least 8 hours per week during the school year. Hours and days are flexible. The expectation is that you are willing to keep this job for at least 1 year (preferably working over the summer), with the opportunity to extend. Summer also often brings the opportunity for you to work additional hours and more independently on
a small project of your own, which we would be happy to facilitate.
START DATE: September 2022
STARTING SALARY: $15/hour
