Position Summary: The Entry-Level Designer is a graduate of an accredited architectural program, has 1 – 3 years of experience and is on a path toward professional licensure. She or he develops design or technical solutions under close supervision of an architect and progresses to more complex and independent assignments as knowledge and skills advance. To broaden and deepen skills Entry-Level Designers may also be assigned more complex or novel assignments requiring research and the development of new or improved techniques. Entry-Level Designers have the opportunity to work on both residential and commercial projects and to be involved in all phases of project delivery. The successful Entry-Level Designer may advance to Architect/Designer 1.

Duties Responsibilities

  • Assists firm architects and designers with project delivery while building the fundamental skills required to create excellent architecture. Advances in accordance with skill development and application.
  • Functions as an engaged apprentice, learning from experience and mistakes, mastering new tasks and making logical connections between disparate aspect work. Uses both mentor instruction and personal resourcefulness to advance knowledge, skills and abilities.
  • Prepares high quality, electronically drafted plans, sections, elevations, details and other graphic representations, working from developed designs, sketches, functional diagrams, schematics and verbal instructions
  • Corrects redlined work with high level of accuracy, performing multiple iterations as required
  • Applies and continually develops drawing skills including hand sketching and both 2 and 3-D electronic drafting skills using AutoCAD, Revit and others
  • Applies and continually develops familiarity with building codes applicable to commercial, winery, and residential design in the state of California
  • Applies and continually develops understanding of building construction methodologies including wood, metal and concrete as well as key factors influencing energy efficiency and environmental impact of building design, systems and materials
  • Assists with production, organization and assembly of drawing sets, building the expertise and accuracy required to move from working under close supervision to organizing and assembling sets with minimal supervision
  • Develops understanding of the scope of architectural project teams, the roles consultants play in the development of sound architecture and the value of Building Information Modeling (BIM)
  • Develops design or technical solutions as assigned
  • Ability to collaborate with supervisor to prioritize work, to manage time effectively and meet deadlines within a fast-paced work environment
  • Ability to work as an engaged and effective part of a team, maintaining a flexible attitude and willingness to take on a wide assortment of tasks
  • Assists studio team with in-house projects such as development of drawing and AutoCAD standards, creation of electronic details library or maintenance of reference and samples library
  • Enriches studio environment and firm output by regularly contributing ideas and opinions to work at hand
  • Develops and maintains positive, collaborative and cooperative relationships with colleagues
  • Collaborates with supervisor on individual program for professional development
  • Abides by the policies and protocols set forth in the Signum Employee Handbook
  • Acts as an ambassador for Signum Architecture in all work related activities and conversations, projecting a capable, friendly and professional image while maintaining client and firm confidentiality

Required Qualifications

  • Bachelor or advanced level degree in architecture from an accredited United States institution or international equivalent
  • Professional drafting experience under the supervision of a licensed architect or civil engineer. This may have occurred in an educational environment, through a paid job or an unpaid internship
  • Fundamental knowledge and understanding of wood, metal and concrete construction methods
  • Fundamental knowledge and understanding of dimensioning, scaling, and typical CAD standards
  • Strong Revit and/or AutoCAD (2007 or later) and hand drafting skills and aptitude to master Revit and/or AutoCAD Architecture
  • Fundamental skills in several of the following: MS Word, MS Excel, MS PowerPoint, Photoshop, Sketch-up, Rhino
  • Ability to understand and follow architectural design and detailing instructions with a high degree of accuracy and attention to detail
  • Ability to communicate effectively in English both orally and in writing
