What are the responsibilities and job description for the Sign & Graphics Production Specialist position at Signs 330?
Role Summary
We are looking for an experienced, detail-oriented production professional to serve as the critical bridge between our computer design station and our shop floor.
You will spend roughly 20% of your day at the workstation performing technical prepress—verifying customer vector files, creating cut paths, color matching, and nesting print runs—and the remaining 80% hands-on on the floor operating wide-format printers, CNC/plotter equipment, laminating, weeding, and assembling signs.
This is not a pure desk graphic design job, nor is it a traditional administrative office manager role. You are the tactical pace-setter of the shop who ensures every job is built accurately, cleanly, and on schedule.
What You’ll Do (Responsibilities)
Prepress & Digital Setup (20%)
- Preflight Customer Files: Inspect client-provided artwork in Adobe Illustrator to verify resolution, font outlines, bleeds, dimensions, and color profiles.
- Cut-Path Generation: Build vector cut lines, routing paths, drill holes, and score contours for plotters, digital flatbed cutters, and CNC routers.
- Paneling & Tiling: Accurately split vehicle graphics, wall murals, and oversized signage into printable vertical drops with appropriate overlap allowances.
- RIP & Nesting: Load and optimize job queues in RIP software to maximize media yield and minimize scrap substrate waste.
Hands-on Production & Fabrication (80%)
- Printing & Plotting: Operate wide-format roll-to-roll and flatbed printers (UV, latex, or eco-solvent) and vinyl cutting plotters.
- Finishing & Mounting: Laminate printed media, mount prints to rigid substrates (foam board, PVC/Sintra, ACM/Dibond, acrylic, coroplast), and trim edges cleanly.
- Vinyl Application & Assembly: Weed vinyl, apply transfer tape, mask graphics, and handle the assembly of dimensional lettering, pan faces, banners, and yard signs.
- Workflow & Pace-Setting: Monitor the daily production queue, stage raw materials, run quality-control checks, and pack completed work for customer pickup or field install crews.
- Shop Maintenance: Keep equipment running smoothly, perform routine maintenance, and maintain a clean, organized, and safe workspace.
What You Bring (Qualifications)
- Experience: 2 years of hands-on experience in a sign shop, wide-format print shop, or commercial print production environment.
- Technical Fluency: Strong proficiency with RIP software (e.g., Onyx, Flexi, VersaWorks, Caldera).
- Material Knowledge: Solid working knowledge of sign substrates (ACM, acrylic, PVC, coroplast) and vinyl types (cast vs. calendered).
- The Right Mindset: Meticulous attention to detail, a proactive "team-first" attitude, and a passion for craftsmanship.
- Physical Capability: Ability to stand for extended periods, lift 4x8 substrate sheets (up to 50 lbs), and handle precision tools safely.
Bonus Experience (Preferred)
- Experience operating a CNC router or flatbed digital cutter.
- Experience with vehicle wrap preparation or flat vehicle graphic installation.
- Experience with shop management software (SignTracker, ShopVOX, Corebridge, etc.).
