The successful candidate will be responsible for the installation, maintenance, repair, and troubleshooting of traffic signal systems, intersection control equipment, Intelligent Transportation Systems (ITS), and related traffic management infrastructure. This role requires technical expertise, attention to detail, and a commitment to public safety.
Key Responsibilities
Installation & Maintenance
- Install, configure, and commission traffic signal systems, controllers, and detection equipment
- Perform routine maintenance on traffic signals, pedestrian signals, and intersection control devices
- Conduct preventive maintenance inspections and document findings
- Replace defective components including signal heads, controllers, detectors, and wiring
- Maintain accurate service records and equipment inventories
- Program and configure traffic signal controllers using various software platforms
- Troubleshoot electrical and communication issues in traffic control systems
- Test and calibrate vehicle detection systems (inductive loops, video, radar)
- Perform timing studies and signal optimization adjustments
- Install and maintain communication networks for traffic management systems
- Respond to emergency service calls for malfunctioning traffic signals
- Coordinate with local municipalities, DOT, and other agencies
- Provide technical support and consultation to clients
- Ensure compliance with local, state, and federal traffic control standards
- Maintain professional appearance and conduct while representing the company
Safety & Documentation
- Follow all safety protocols and OSHA regulations
- Complete work orders, service reports, and time sheets accurately
- Maintain required certifications and attend ongoing training
Education & Experience
- High school diploma or equivalent required
- Associate degree in electronics, electrical technology, or related field preferred
- Minimum 3 years of experience in traffic signal maintenance or electrical field work
- Experience with traffic signal controllers (Econolite, McCain, Siemens, etc.)
- Strong electrical troubleshooting and repair skills
- Proficiency with digital multimeters, and other electronic test equipment
- Understanding of AC/DC electrical systems and motor controls
- Advanced computer skills and ability to learn traffic signal software
- Ability to read electrical schematics and technical drawings
- Valid driver's license with clean driving record
- IMSA Level I Traffic Signal Technician certification preferred
- Experience with intelligent transportation systems (ITS)
- Knowledge of NEMA, Caltrans, or other traffic signal standards
- Previous experience with fiber optic communications
- OSHA 10-Hour Construction Safety certification
Work Environment
- Primary work location is in the field at various traffic intersections
- Regular exposure to traffic and outdoor weather conditions
- Occasional evening and weekend work required
- Participation in on-call rotation for emergency services
- Travel throughout Central-North New Jersey region
