Position Overview Section

The Respiratory Care Provider Instructor is responsible for planning, developing, and delivering classroom, simulation, and hands-on instruction supporting Critical Care Air Transport Team (CCATT) training at the U.S. Air Force School of Aerospace Medicine (USAFSAM). Working under the supervision of the Site Director, the instructor prepares healthcare professionals to provide advanced respiratory and critical care during aeromedical evacuation missions through evidence-based instruction, simulation, and competency evaluation.

 

Essential Job Functions

 

  • Develop, coordinate, and deliver didactic, simulation-based, and hands-on respiratory care instruction in accordance with USAFSAM and CCATT curriculum requirements.
  • Provide high-quality instruction in military and civilian air transport medicine, including patient stabilization, aeromedical evacuation procedures, and in-flight critical care management.
  • Perform assigned instructional roles throughout each course with defined weekly responsibilities.
  • Develop and deliver training in:
    • Aerospace physiology and altitude medicine.
    • Emergency airway management and mechanical ventilation.
    • Pulmonary function assessment and arterial blood gas (ABG) interpretation.
    • Critical care transport ventilators, oxygen delivery systems, and patient monitoring equipment.
    • Cardiac and pulmonary resuscitation during patient transport.
    • Rapid patient evacuation procedures supporting combat, disaster response, and humanitarian operations.
  • Demonstrate proper operation, calibration, and troubleshooting of respiratory and critical care transport equipment.
  • Utilize high-fidelity simulation equipment and medical manikins to recreate realistic in-flight patient care scenarios.
  • Develop and maintain lesson plans, learning objectives, instructional materials, and student resources in accordance with USAF CCATT guidelines.
  • Evaluate student performance through written examinations, practical skills assessments, simulation exercises, and oral evaluations.
  • Participate in curriculum review boards and continuously integrate current evidence-based respiratory and critical care practices into course content.
  • Demonstrate best practices for respiratory monitoring, ventilator management, oxygen utilization, patient stabilization, and patient packaging during aeromedical transport.
  • Participate in after-action reviews, quality assurance initiatives, and continuous program improvement activities.
  • Advise the Medical Director and Course Director on respiratory care best practices, transport medicine, oxygen utilization, and disaster response procedures.
  • Maintain accurate student records, attendance, grades, competency documentation, and course performance metrics.
  • Attend faculty meetings, planning sessions, curriculum development meetings, and other administrative activities.
  • Participate in professional development activities, continuing education, peer reviews, and simulated aeromedical evacuation exercises.
  • Ensure compliance with military safety standards, transport protocols, and proper handling of medical equipment within operational training environments.

Qualifications

Minimum Position Requirements

  • Registered Respiratory Therapist (RRT) credential through the National Board for Respiratory Care (NBRC).
  • Current, unrestricted Respiratory Therapist license in any U.S. state or territory.
  • Minimum five (5) years of clinical respiratory care experience in an acute care setting.
  • Minimum two (2) years of critical care experience.
  • Current Basic Life Support (BLS) certification.
  • Current Advanced Life Support (ALS/ACLS) certification.
  • Ability to complete the USAFSAM Basic Instructor Course (BIC) within 60 days of hire and complete the required 60 instructor qualification hours.
  • Excellent written, verbal, and interpersonal communication skills.
  • Experience developing and delivering healthcare education or clinical instruction.
  • Ability to work effectively in multidisciplinary healthcare training environments.
  • Ability to lift up to 50 pounds and move simulation equipment.
  • Ability to work in low-light, high-volume, and operational training environments, including varying weather conditions supporting simulated aeromedical evacuation missions.

Highly Desired Qualifications

  • Pediatric Advanced Life Support (PALS) certification.
  • Previous military medical experience.
  • Prior Critical Care Air Transport Team (CCAT) or aeromedical evacuation experience.
  • Experience with simulation-based medical education.
  • Experience using high-fidelity patient simulators and medical simulation technologies.
  • Familiarity with military trauma care and operational medicine.
