Job Description:
PATIENT POPULATION:
The patient population served can be all patients, including geriatric, adult, adolescent, pediatric, and newborn. This also includes services which affect facility staff, physicians, visitors, vendors and the general public.
POSITION SUMMARY:
Under the supervision of the Pharmacy Technician Supervisor, the Pharmacy Technician provides supportive help to the Pharmacist in distributing prescriptions for patients, outpatients. Demonstrates the ability to obtain and interpret information in terms of the patient's needs. When working in the ED, under the supervision of the Pharmacy Technician Supervisor, and in collaboration with the patient care team: will accurately collect and validate current prescribed medications, herbal supplements and over the counter medications for admitted patients and all other emergency department patients as time allows; will enter the information into the appropriate electronic medical records sections.
"Must be able to work normal/scheduled working hours to include Holidays, call-backs, weeknights, weekends, and on-call. Agrees to participate, as directed, in emergencies and community disasters during scheduled and unscheduled hours. As a designated disaster service worker you are required to assist in times of need pursuant to the California Emergency Services Act.

To perform this job successfully, an individual should be a high school graduate or equivalent. Prefer experience in retail pharmacy. Prefer ability to communicate in Spanish. Registration with the California Board of Pharmacy as a Pharmacy Technician is required.
Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals. Ability to write routine reports and correspondence if required. Ability to read, write, speak and understand English, and communicate effectively verbally and in writing.
Ability to calculate figures and amounts such as discounts, interest, commissions, proportions, and percentages if required.
Ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out instructions furnished in written, oral, or diagram form. Ability to deal with problems involving several concrete variables in standardized situations.
To perform this job successfully, an individual should have knowledge of basic computer skills.
LICENSURE/CERTIFICATIONS:
To perform this job successfully, an individual must be registered with the California Board of Pharmacy as a Pharmacy Technician. Must have and maintain current American Heart Association BLS certification or obtain within orientation process, prior to assignment.
Responsibilities and Essential Functions:
- Indicates Essential Function
1* Under the direction of the Pharmacist and supervision of the Pharmacy Technician Supervisor receives patient orders, communicates these to Pharmacist and may deliver or send completed order to patient care areas.
2* When working in the ED, compiles a complete and accurate list of the patient’s home medications including over-the-counter medications and herbal supplements inclusive of the drug/product name, dosage, frequency, route, indication, compliance, drug allergies and symptoms and when last dose was taken.
3* May make and deliver bulk solutions, print labels, prepackage unit-dose orals and liquids.
4* When working in the ED, clarifies the medication information through interview with the patient, family, care givers, pharmacies, previous medical records and medical providers as necessary.
5* When working in the ED, notifies the healthcare provider of any duplications, errors, or other important discrepancies in the medication history.
6* Communicates in a courteous and professional manner.
7 May perform other duties as assigned by the Pharmacy Technician Supervisor.
8* When working in the ED, processes/enters current medications with complete prescription information into the computerized medical record.
9 Answers incoming calls and Pharmacy door with etiquette.
10* Under the direction of the Pharmacist and supervision of the Pharmacy Technician Supervisor receives incoming merchandise, processes and restocks, adds new stock, fills and delivers nursing unit supplies. Reorders medication as needed.
11* Fills Pyxis accurately and delivers medications to all units in a timely manner.
12* Performs clerical and manual tasks in I.V. Center and on the computer system.
a. Under the supervision of a Licensed Pharmacist, reconstitutes and labels I.V. medications.
b. Orders and stocks the I.V. Center appropriately.
c. Cleans IV Hood daily. Keeps IV room free of clutter. Paperwork filed accordingly.
d. Delivers completed I.V. admixtures to proper patient care area.
13 Accurately Performs Medication Area Inspections as required.
14 Participates in department staff meetings, training, education and orientation.
15 Promotes a positive, professional and collaborative working environment.
16 Delivers prepared medications once completed and checked in a timely manner.
17 Has the ability to manage required breaks and meal periods while not leaving leaving the Pharmacy unattended.
18 * Must possess a valid California driver's license.
19 * Be in attendance on site and arrive to work on time.
