Position Title: Forest Health Technician

The South Yuba River Citizens League (SYRCL) is a nonprofit organization founded in 1983 to protect and restore the Yuba River watershed in Northern California. Headquartered in Nevada City, CA, SYRCL is dedicated to ensuring a healthy, resilient watershed for people, wildlife, and future generations. SYRCL’s Forest Health Department collaborates closely with local, state, federal, and Tribal partners, as well as private landowners, to implement science-based forest and meadow restoration and monitoring projects across the watershed. Through these partnerships, SYRCL supports fuels reduction, meadow and headwater restoration, and climate-resilient land management practices that improve forest health, protect communities from wildfire, and enhance water quality and ecosystem resilience.

SYRCL unites the community to protect and restore the Yuba River watershed with the understanding that forest health and resilience are essential to a healthy watershed. The forest health program is built on collaboration, planning, and cross-boundary action to restore resilient landscapes, reduce wildfire risk, protect water resources, and engage the community. This work is rooted in partnerships that bring together local communities, federal agencies, tribes, non-profits, and technical experts to implement informed restoration on a landscape scale. The department is focused on the following goals:

  • Long-term Monitoring

The Forest Health Technician will be supporting the Forest Health Project Manager with monitoring riparian and water quality for a landscape scale Forest Health project. This position plays a key role in monitoring, assessment, mapping, and data input and analyzation that advance forest and river health in the Yuba River watershed.

Project Priorities:

  • Watershed assessment and site selection
  • Maintain an up to date geospatial database for monitoring sites
  • Water quality monitoring including, air and water temperature, conductivity, turbidity, dissolved oxygen content, salinity, and turbidity
  • Riparian community monitoring (AIM National Aquatic Monitoring Framework: Field Protocol for Lentic Riparian and Wetland Systems)
  • Sonde maintenance and continuous water quality monitoring
  • Data analysis with SYRCL’s project managers to QA/QC monitoring data, use statistical analyses and graphical software to transform data into digestible visualizations ready for presentations and reports.
  • Assist with the planning, coordination, and implementation of monitoring plan for 2026–2027
  • Represent SYRCL at events, including but not limited to Fish Day and State of the Yuba, River Cleanup, and Downieville Downhill by setting up a booth, promoting programs, educating the public about the Yuba River watershed.

Desired Qualifications:

  • Background in science (coursework or relevant experience)
  • Ability to conduct lab work for extended periods of time
  • Ability to conduct year-round field activities, sometimes in inclement weather
  • Ability to work on boats and in aquatic environments
  • Ability to lift 50lbs
  • Experience working in a team environment
  • Skills facilitating and/or participating in group meetings
  • Ability to lay out tasks, identify resources, focus and complete tasks on time
  • Strong writing skills
  • Independent, highly motivated, and able to meet deadlines with limited supervision
  • Passion for the natural environment
  • Ability to travel throughout the region
  • Physical ability to perform strenuous activities at high elevations

National Service Benefits:

  • $2,773 per month living stipend per month for the term of service.

National Service Qualifications:

  • Must be 18 years of age and high school graduates or GED recipients (or minimum of 17 and working toward a high school diploma or GED); members must agree to obtain either a diploma or GED before using an education award; meeting full list of member eligibility requirements in 45 CFR §2522.200(a)
  • Must be a U.S. citizen, U.S. national or lawful permanent resident
  • Must participate in a national criminal history background check pursuant to 45 CFR §2540.200-206
