Associate Head Coach ,Girls Crew

Sidwell Friends School, a coeducational Quaker day school, seeks a dedicated, dynamic, and experienced, part-time Associate Head Coach for Girls’ Crew to help lead, develop, and inspire student-athletes within our competitive rowing program. Working closely with the Head Rowing Coach, the Associate Head Coach will play a key leadership role in developing the program, organizing daily practices, designing training programs, preparing the team for regattas, assisting with equipment logistics and maintenance, and reinforcing the School’s commitment to academic excellence, sportsmanship, and Quaker values.

Duties & Responsibilities

• Represent Sidwell Friends School and the rowing program professionally in all aspects, including during training and competition. Model nondiscriminatory practices in all activities.
• Organize and lead land-based sessions during the winter (November-February) focused on teaching technique, ergometer performance, strength and conditioning and mental toughness.
• Assist in planning daily practices on the water, rigging and maintaining racing shells and equipment, and formulating race strategies/lineups.
• Help coordinate and manage logistics for spring training.
• Lead the training and development of novice rowers.
• Foster an inclusive, positive and safe team culture that prioritizes student health, sportsmanship, personal growth and team cohesion.
• Embody and uphold Sidwell Friends’ core Quaker values—including integrity, mutual respect, community, and peaceful resolution both on and off the water.
• Coordinate and assist with regatta logistics, race entries, trailer loading/unloading, equipment transport, and race-day athlete management.
• Ensure proper care and maintenance for all boats, launches, oars, and other equipment.
• Maintain clear, professional communication with student athletes, parents, fellow coaches, and athletic staff regarding schedules, logistics and athlete progress.
• Abide by SFS and Virginia Scholastic Rowing Association rules and regulations.
• As a condition of employment, the selected candidate will complete and clear a background and fingerprint screening before the first day of work. Upon hire, they will obtain CPR certification, First Aid training, boating license, school minibus driver training, and other requirements.

Required Qualifications

• Bachelor’s Degree required
• 3 years of successful coaching experience at the high school, club, or collegiate level and extensive personal rowing background preferred.
• USRowing Level 2 certification or willingness to obtain.
• Demonstrate effective coaching skills and techniques and knowledge of the rules, regulations and strategies.
• Demonstrate the ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with school administrators, parents and students.
• Deep understanding of rowing stroke mechanics, boat rigging, race strategy and land and water training principles.
• Available to work early morning practices and weekend regattas.

Working Conditions & Physical Requirements

• Driver’s license.
• Ability to drive motor launches.
• Physical capability to assist with lifting, moving, and rigging heavy rowing shells (up to 50 lbs.), oars, and other equipment.

Compensation

• Stipend $7,490.00-$10,946.60. Stipend will be commensurate with experience and qualifications
