Job Description

Position Summary

The Motion Analysis Center Physical Therapist (MAC PT) reports directly to the System MAC PT (SMAC PT)

The MAC PT provides evaluation and motion analysis center services, including direct patient care, patient/family and education in an efficient, age-appropriate, and culturally sensitive manner upon a referral from a licensed independent practitioner.

The MAC PT collaborates with the medical staff and the multidisciplinary team to design an individualized treatment plan to meet the needs of the pediatric patient and their family.

The MAC PT will conduct interdisciplinary team meetings to review MAC findings, interpretations and recommendations.

The MAC PT mentors and educates to residents, students and other professionals.

The MAC PT is responsible for personal professional growth and development through ongoing education and research.

The MAC PT maintains current knowledge in changes related to the scope of practice, coding/billing practices, compliant documentation and any other knowledge related to compliant practice in a revenue cycle environment.

The MAC PT works in collaboration with the SMAC PT and local leaders, to provide exceptional care following the Shriners Hospitals for Children® FOCUSED©™ Program. This program is a system-wide model for professional practice that emphasizes patient-centered care and always prioritizes the needs of patients and their families.

Position Responsibilities

Clinical Care 50%

  • Competent in SMACnet standards for the examination of the patient including history/systems review, selection and administration of specific tests and measures, including but not limited to range of motion, manual muscle testing, outcome measures and neurological testing.
  • Competent in basic collection of motion capture data, EMG, pedobarograph, video, report generation to ensure continuity of care if the coordinator or engineer is not available.
  • Provide facility specific clinical lines of service, which may include but is not limited to gait, upper extremity, spine, sports and wheelchair analysis.
  • Provides patient and family education regarding the motion analysis evaluation.
  • Demonstrates effective and efficient use of time by maintaining a full caseload as determined by the SMAC PT.
  • Ensures proper scheduling and coverage of all clinical care needs.
  • As needed, assists with obtaining insurance authorization, and participates in peer-to-peer calls with insurance companies.
  • During times of low volume, covers rehabilitation needs.

Clinical Documentation 35%

  • Demonstrates proficiency in interpreting all data, including but not limited to kinematics, kinetics, EMG, pedobarograph, O2 consumption, and video analysis.
  • Generates a concise and clearly written physical therapy evaluation that summarizes and integrates the pertinent findings of the motion lab evaluation including the patient history, physical exam, spatial and temporal parameters, kinematics, kinetics, electromyography evaluations, foot pressure distribution analysis and other assessments.
  • Supports risk management and compliance initiatives through accurate documentation, that follows the state requirements, payer-specific requirements, regulatory and professional standards, including correct use of American Medical Association Current Procedural Terminology codes and/or Healthcare Common Procedure Coding System when applicable.
  • Leads scheduled motion analysis patient reviews with MAC staff, physicians and additional allied health professionals. During the patient reviews, the physical therapist concisely presents key information from pertinent graphs, summarizes gait abnormalities, and participates in the formulation of treatment plans.

Professional Development 15%

  • Assist the SMAC PT in obtaining and maintaining CMLA accreditation.
  • Functions as a role model within the healthcare team, promoting a positive, organized and safe work environment based on open communication.
  • Assumes responsibility for mentoring students, non-professional staff, volunteers and new employees.
  • Facilitates positive effective relationships with other employees and serves as a resource for other healthcare team members.
  • Seeks opportunities to participate in training/education to expand the knowledge base advance clinical skills and develop evidence-based best practice procedures, compliant documentation and coding practices.
  • Participates in departmental educational opportunities such as in-services, journal clubs, and annual mandatory competencies.
  • As needed, participates in research and quality improvement projects developed by SMAC PT, SMAC engineer and/or MAC developmental Specialist.
  • As needed, represents the MAC in local hospital meetings.
  • Pursues informal leadership opportunities including participation in departmental and interdisciplinary hospital-based committees.
  • Assists as needed with publishing results of research studies in conference abstract proceedings or peer-reviewed journals.

BS, MS or DPT

Additional Knowledge And Skills

Physical therapy background in pediatrics, neuromuscular conditions, sports, motion analysis interpretation.

Compensation is determined based on years of relevant experience and departmental equity.
