Job Description:
Shrewsbury Public Schools is seeking a qualified, 5 day a week, ASL Interpreter for a 6th grade student at Sherwood Middle School. The position would support the general education classroom and special subject allied arts classes such as Art, Music, Physical Education in order to support educational access and communication.
Key Responsibilities:
This role is integral to providing a fully inclusive and accessible educational environment for a student who is deaf/hard of hearing. Your responsibilities will center on facilitating communication, supporting educational goals, and fostering a collaborative learning environment.
Facilitating Communication & Language Access
Provide ASL and spoken language interpreting for a student in various educational settings, including classroom instruction, assemblies, ensuring full language access to the curriculum.
Adapt interpreting methods to meet the diverse linguistic and communication needs of the student, maintaining fluency in both American Sign Language (ASL) and English.
Serve as a communication bridge between students, teachers, and staff, ensuring effective voice-to-sign and sign-to-voice message conveyance.
Educational & Team Collaboration
Partner with classroom teachers to ensure consistent signed communication strategies across all instructional and therapy settings.
Collaborate with speech therapists and other members of the educational team to enhance students' language and speech development.
Actively participate in the IEP process by assisting with data collection, sharing performance insights, and making recommendations related to interpreter use and communication access.
Educate and orient general education teachers and students on the role of the educational interpreter and the interpreter model.
Maintain professional relationships with staff and students, upholding confidentiality and professional boundaries at all times.
Professional Conduct & Development
Uphold and adhere to the professional guidelines set forth by the National Association of Interpreters in Education (NAIE) and the NAD-RID Code of Professional Conduct.
Continuously seek professional growth by staying current with literature, participating in professional development, and actively engaging in staff meetings.
Requirements:
Fluency in American Sign Language (ASL) and a deep understanding of the educational needs of deaf and hard of hearing students.
Excellent collaboration skills and the ability to work effectively within a multidisciplinary team.
Flexibility and a willingness to support a wide range of classroom activities, including art, music, and physical education.
Meet or exceed the minimum requirements set by the Massachusetts Commission for the Deaf & Hard of Hearing (MCDHH) and the Department of Elementary and Secondary Education (DESE), including an MCDHH Screening and a minimum rating of 3.5 on the Educational Interpreter Performance Assessment (EIPA).
Bachelor's Degree preferred.
Completion of an Interpreter Training Program (ITP) and experience in child development and education are a plus.
