SHR Talent has partnered with a longstanding and quality Landscaping Company based out of Jacksonville, FL in its search for a strategic, hands-on Controller to lead financial strategy, strengthen internal controls, and deliver actionable financial insights for a high-growth construction and landscaping business.
Responsibilities
- Lead financial strategy, partnering with executive leadership to drive profitable growth, margin expansion, and scalable finance operations for construction and landscaping projects.
- Oversee month-end, quarter-end, and year-end close; prepare and present timely GAAP-compliant financial statements, variance analysis, and board-level reporting.
- Annual Management of 1099 reporting.
- Primary point of contact for external auditors
- Implement and optimize process improvements, internal controls, and SOX-lite procedures to reduce risk, improve efficiency, and scale the finance function.
- Manage job costing, project accounting, revenue recognition, change order tracking, and gross margin analysis across landscaping, hardscape, and civil construction projects.
- Direct budgeting, forecasting, cash flow management, and long-range financial modeling to support working capital and growth initiatives.
- Lead ERP/financial systems selection, implementation, integrations, and optimization (experience with Sage Intacct, Microsoft Dynamics, Viewpoint, or QuickBooks preferred).
- Drive month-to-month KPI tracking and dashboards (backlog, WIP, burn rates, gross margin by project, AR aging, AP turnover) to inform operational decisions.
- Supervise and develop accounting team members, oversee payroll, AP/AR, tax compliance, and external audit coordination.
- Partner with operations and project managers to standardize cost codes, change order processes, purchase order controls, and subcontractor compliance.
- Identify opportunities for cost reduction, pricing improvements, and process automation using technology (Procore, CMMS, BI tools).
Qualifications
- 5 years of progressive accounting/finance experience with 3 years in a Controller or senior finance leadership role; direct experience in construction, landscaping, or heavy civil contracting required.
- Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, or related field; CPA or CMA strongly preferred.
- Public Accounting experience is plus
- Advanced proficiency in Microsoft Excel and QuickBooks Online
- Deep knowledge of construction accounting, job costing, revenue recognition, retainage, subcontractor management, and change order accounting.
- Proven track record driving process improvement, ERP implementations, and financial system integrations.
- Strong technical skills: advanced Excel, ERP systems (Sage, Dynamics, Viewpoint, or Intacct), Procore or construction management software, and BI/reporting tools.
- Demonstrated ability to produce actionable financial analysis, forecasts, budgets, and dashboards that influence executive decision-making.
- Excellent leadership and communication skills; ability to collaborate cross-functionally with operations, estimating, and project management teams.
- High attention to detail, strong internal control mindset, and experience managing external audits and tax filings.
- Located in or willing to relocate to Jacksonville, FL; travel to project sites as needed.
