Paraprofessional

Position Title: Paraprofessional 
Department: Special Education / Classroom Support
Reports To: Classroom Teacher / School Principal / Special Education Director
FLSA Status: Non-Exempt
Location: Show Low Unified School District

Calendar: 152 days / 8 hours per day

 

Position Overview:
The Paraprofessional Level 1 (General Education) provides support to students and teachers in the classroom. This entry-level position is ideal for individuals who are passionate about working with children and assisting in creating an inclusive and positive learning environment. The Paraprofessional will work under the direct supervision of the classroom teacher and assist in managing classroom activities, providing support to students, and maintaining a productive classroom environment.

Key Responsibilities:

  1. Classroom Support:
    • Assist the classroom teacher in implementing daily lessons, activities, and routines.
    • Help with setting up materials, organizing the classroom, and preparing resources for lessons.
    • Support students in completing tasks and activities, providing individual or small group assistance when needed.
    • Monitor students during classroom activities to ensure focus, engagement, and positive behavior.
    • Provide academic support to students, reinforcing lessons and helping them understand instructions.
  2. Student Support:
    • Provide one-on-one support to students who need additional assistance, including helping with assignments, reading comprehension, and math tasks.
    • Offer encouragement and motivation to students who may need help staying engaged or focused.
    • Assist students with special needs (e.g., physical, learning, or emotional challenges) under the guidance of the teacher or specialist.
    • Observe and document student progress or challenges, providing feedback to the teacher to address specific needs.
  3. Behavior Management:
    • Help manage classroom behavior by reinforcing positive behavior and redirecting inappropriate behavior.
    • Assist with implementing behavior management strategies as outlined by the teacher or behavior intervention plan.
    • Help maintain a positive and supportive classroom environment that encourages learning and social interaction.
    • Ensure student safety by monitoring behavior, especially in common areas such as hallways, lunchrooms, or playgrounds.
  4. Classroom Organization and Materials:
    • Assist with maintaining the cleanliness and organization of the classroom and other learning areas.
    • Ensure that instructional materials, supplies, and classroom resources are available and in good condition.
    • Assist in preparing classroom displays, bulletin boards, and other visual learning aids.
  5. Supervision and Safety:
    • Supervise students during non-instructional activities, including recess, lunch, and transitions between classes.
    • Ensure students are safe and properly supervised while in the classroom or other areas of the school.
    • Assist with the movement of students to and from special activities, ensuring that students are on time and safely escorted.
  6. Communication and Collaboration:
    • Communicate effectively with the classroom teacher, other paraprofessionals, and staff to ensure student needs are being met.
    • Participate in team meetings and professional development as needed to improve skills and strategies.
    • Build positive relationships with students, offering support and encouragement to foster an inclusive learning environment.
    • Report any concerns or incidents to the teacher or supervisor, including changes in student behavior, health, or academic progress.
  7. Confidentiality and Professionalism:
    • Maintain confidentiality regarding student information and classroom activities in accordance with district policies.
    • Follow all school and district guidelines, policies, and procedures.
    • Uphold a professional demeanor and model appropriate behavior for students at all times.

Qualifications:

  • Education: High school diploma or equivalent required. An associate's degree or coursework in education, child development, or a related field is preferred.
  • Experience: Previous experience working with children, especially in a classroom or educational setting, is a plus but not required for entry-level candidates.
  • Skills:
    • Strong communication skills, both verbal and written.
    • Ability to work collaboratively with teachers, staff, and students.
    • Patience, empathy, and a passion for helping students succeed.
    • Basic organizational skills and the ability to manage multiple tasks.
    • Understanding of classroom procedures and the ability to follow instructions effectively.
  • Certifications:
    • CPR and First Aid certification preferred or willing to obtain.
    • Background check clearance required.

Physical Requirements:

  • Ability to lift and carry instructional materials or classroom supplies up to 25 pounds.
  • Ability to assist students in mobility or positioning, particularly those with physical disabilities.
  • Ability to kneel, bend, and assist with physical tasks that may be required in the classroom or during activities.

Working Conditions:

  • The position will be performed primarily during school hours and may require occasional evenings for school events or meetings.
  • The Paraprofessional will work in a classroom setting but may also assist with student supervision in other school areas such as the cafeteria, playground, or during field trips.
  • Some duties may require standing, walking, or sitting for extended periods, and active supervision during recess or other outdoor activities.
