Assistant Coach – Robotics Team

Location: Show Low High School (SLHS)
Reports To: Head Coach, School Administration

Position Overview:

Show Low High School (SLHS) is seeking a dedicated and motivated Assistant Coach for the robotics team. This individual will support the Head Coach in managing the robotics program, mentoring students, and preparing the team for competitions. The Assistant Coach will help foster a collaborative and inspiring environment, encouraging students to deepen their technical skills, work together as a team, and pursue excellence in STEM and robotics. This role is ideal for someone with a passion for robotics and youth development who can support the team’s growth and success in competitions.

Key Responsibilities:

Team Support & Mentorship:

  • Assist the Head Coach in overseeing the robotics team, providing hands-on mentorship and guidance to students.
  • Support students in their learning and growth, providing help with technical challenges and promoting a positive team atmosphere.
  • Serve as a role model and leader, encouraging students to take on leadership roles and work collaboratively.

Technical Assistance & Training:

  • Assist in leading training sessions for students, focusing on specific areas of robotics, including mechanical design, programming, electrical systems, and troubleshooting.
  • Provide individual or small group instruction to help students master technical skills, offering guidance on specific components like CAD design, sensors, or programming languages.
  • Help ensure the team is meeting the technical standards required for competition robots.

Competition Support:

  • Work alongside the Head Coach to prepare the team for local, regional, and state robotics competitions.
  • Support the team at competitions, assisting with robot setup, troubleshooting, and providing on-site guidance during events.
  • Ensure that the team is following all competition rules and strategies and help them adjust tactics as necessary.

Administrative & Logistical Support:

  • Assist with administrative tasks such as registering for competitions, ordering materials, and managing supplies.
  • Help maintain records for budget, competition registration, and other necessary paperwork.
  • Collaborate with the Head Coach to track team progress and provide feedback to students, parents, and school administration.

Fostering a STEM-focused Environment:

  • Encourage students to explore new technologies, tools, and real-world problem-solving scenarios.
  • Support initiatives to promote STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics) engagement within the school and community.
  • Help organize STEM-related outreach events, workshops, or presentations to generate interest and build excitement for the robotics program.

Skills and Qualifications:

Technical Expertise:

  • A strong understanding of robotics, including mechanical, electrical, and programming aspects.
  • Familiarity with robotics programming languages (such as Java, C , or similar) and tools like CAD software.
  • Basic understanding of electrical systems, wiring, and sensor integration for robotics projects.

Leadership & Teamwork:

  • Strong interpersonal skills and the ability to work effectively in a team-oriented environment.
  • Ability to motivate, encourage, and mentor high school students, providing both technical and emotional support.
  • Willingness to share knowledge and provide hands-on instruction to students at various skill levels.

Communication Skills:

  • Strong communication skills, both verbal and written, for interacting with students, the Head Coach, school administration, and external stakeholders.
  • Ability to explain complex technical concepts in a simple, clear manner for students of varying skill levels.

Time Management & Organizational Skills:

  • Ability to prioritize tasks, manage multiple responsibilities, and meet deadlines during the busy build season.
  • Strong organizational skills to assist with logistical planning for competitions, materials, and team activities.

Experience:

  • Previous experience with high school robotics, such as in roles like assistant coach, mentor, or team member, is highly desirable.
  • Experience in a STEM-related field, or as a teacher or coach, would be beneficial.
  • Familiarity with robotics competition formats (FIRST Robotics, VEX Robotics, etc.) and related strategies is a plus.

Additional Information:

Time Commitment:

  • Typically requires 5-10 hours per week during the build season (September to February).
  • Availability to attend 3-5 competitions annually, typically Thursday to Saturday.
