Seeking a qualified CAD Designer to collaborate with project managers to design and engineer drawings and plans for custom metal fabricated parts.

Position Overview

The Steel Detailer will be responsible for creating accurate shop drawings, bills of material, and CNC-ready files for fabrication projects. This role also includes preparing part files for our CNC plasma table to support efficient shop operations. You’ll work closely with project managers and shop staff to ensure parts are detailed to specification and released to the floor on time.

Key Responsibilities

  • Prepare shop and erection drawings for structural and miscellaneous steel projects.
  • Generate bills of material, cutting lists, and CNC part files.
  • Develop and optimize drawings for the CNC plasma table and other CNC equipment.
  • Translate customer prints and CAD files into detailed shop instructions.
  • Coordinate with project managers and shop floor leads to resolve design issues.
  • Ensure compliance with industry standards, fabrication requirements, and ISO 9001 procedures.
  • Maintain document control and revisions within Fulcrum ERP.
  • Work closely with Project Managers to design and engineer drawings and plans for custom fabricated parts.
  • Generate sales drawings as required
  • Generate customer approval prints as required
  • Generate fabrication cut lists as required
  • Check drafting output of other Designers and Project Engineers
  • Interpret architect’s drawings and specifications for integration into design and manufacturing of barrier products
  • Work extensively with AutoCAD 2D for design and manufacturing
  • Work with AutoCAD 3D for design and manufacturing
  • Support multiple project and client deadlines and deliverables

Qualifications

  • Associate Degree from accredited college or university or equivalent
  • Experience with AutoCAD or equivalent
  • Must be extremely organized and exhibit a high degree of attention to detail
  • Additional hands-on production shop experience preferred
  • Understanding of sheet metal flat layout
  • Ability to meet tight deadlines and heavy workload
  • 2 years of experience in steel detailing and/or CNC part preparation (preferred).
  • Proficiency in AutoCAD, Fusion 360, or similar CAD/CAM software.
  • Knowledge of CNC programming and nesting practices for plasma and fabrication equipment.
  • Strong understanding of steel fabrication processes.
  • Ability to read and interpret structural and architectural drawings.
  • High attention to detail, accuracy, and deadlines.

Position Title: CAD Designer / Drafter, Sheet Metal Fabrication

Summary: The CAD Designer creates accurate 2D drawings and 3D models of custom sheet metal parts and assemblies, translating customer specifications and engineer designs into detailed, manufacturable plans. This role works closely with the production team to ensure designs are optimized for fabrication, meet quality standards, and are delivered on schedule.

Key responsibilities:

  • Create detailed 2D and 3D CAD models of sheet metal components, weldments, and assemblies using CAD software such as SolidWorks or Inventor.
  • Interpret and translate customer blueprints, specifications, and design concepts into accurate technical drawings for fabrication.
  • Develop flat patterns and nesting layouts for use with computer-controlled (CNC) equipment, including laser cutters and plasma cutters.
  • Prepare files, such as DXF or STP files, and other technical documentation for use by manufacturing systems.
  • Collaborate with engineers, project managers, and shop floor personnel to ensure designs are manufacturable, cost-effective, and meet all project requirements.
  • Review and revise existing drawings based on new specifications, feedback from the shop, or design modifications.
  • Maintain an organized database of digital and paper drawings, ensuring proper version control and revision history.
