This faculty position serves as an Academic Advisor in the Advising Services Department within the Student Affairs Division. The department provides comprehensive academic advising to students through direct support and collaboration with instructional and student service units. Guided by a developmental and proactive advising philosophy, academic advisors empower students to navigate their educational pathways, make informed decisions, and achieve their academic, career, and personal goals. Academic Advisors support students through academic and career advising, educational planning, student success coaching, resource referrals, instruction, and collaboration with faculty, staff and community partners.Essential Functions & Responsibilities
- Advising and Student Success
- Advise prospective and current students on academic planning, educational pathways, transfer options, and degree or certificate completion requirements.
- Support students in exploring academic majors and career pathways across transfer and professional-technical programs.
- Develop individualized educational plans using student success platforms and monitor student progress toward goals and completion.
- Provide advising through appointments, drop-in services, orientations, registration support, workshops, and group information sessions.
- Conduct proactive outreach to assigned student caseloads to support retention, enrollment, persistence, educational planning, and academic standing.
- Assist students experiencing academic difficulties and connect them with appropriate resources.
- Foster engaging, inclusive, and accessible learning and advising environments that promote student success and belonging.
- Serve as a liaison to instructional divisions
- Support the development and delivery of faculty advising training materials, presentations, and workshops.
- Build and maintain collaborative relationships with faculty, staff, K-12 partners, community organizations, and higher education institutions.
- Remain current on trends, best practices, and emerging issues in academic advising, student success, and higher education.

- Offer workshops, and large-group sessions that support student success, educational planning, career exploration, and college readiness.
- Collaborate with campus departments to develop and deliver academic success programming.

- Perform other duties as assigned.
- Master's degree in Student Development, Education, Psychology, Counseling, Social Work, or a closely related field.
- Two (2) years of professional experience in academic advising, career development, counseling, or student development theory.
- Experience using Microsoft Office applications, electronic student information systems, and other instructional or student success technologies.
- Student development theory, career development theory, and academic advising practices.
- Transfer admission processes and requirements for in state and out-of-state institutions.
- Student services practices in higher education, including course placement, enrollment, and financial aid processes.
- Student success and retention strategies.
- Foster equity, inclusion, belonging, and multicultural responsiveness in advising and educational settings.
- Apply developmental and proactive advising approaches that support student success and engagement.
- Teach and facilitate learning in individual, group, and classroom settings, including online environments.
- Adapt advising and instructional approaches to meet the needs of students with diverse backgrounds, experiences, and abilities.
- Apply principles of transfer advising, career coaching, and educational planning.
- Build effective working relationships with students, faculty, staff, administrators, and community partners.
- Communicate effectively through written, verbal, and active listening skills.

Workload & Expectations
Office Hours & Student Availability
Academic Advisors are non-instructional faculty at Shoreline. The regularly scheduled work hours are 7 hours a day. They are expected to maintain regular office hours to support student learning and advising. Office hours must be coordinated with the Director and advising staff and clearly communicated to students and may include on-campus and/or virtual availability.
Service & Other Academic Responsibilities
Service constitutes approximately 20% of the full-time faculty workload (approx. 75 hours per quarter). Service activities may include, but are not limited to, departmental and divisional meetings, committee and governance participation, completion of required trainings, assessment work, and other professional responsibilities. Service assignments are coordinated with the unit administrator and aligned with division and College needs.
Professional Development & Evaluation
Faculty are expected to engage in ongoing professional development, including required institutional trainings (such as compliance, equity, and instructional technology) and discipline-specific learning that supports instructional quality and student success. Faculty performance is evaluated in accordance with the Collective Bargaining Agreement and established evaluation and Appointment Review Committee (ARC) criteria, as applicable to the appointment type.
Physical Work Environment
This position provides in-person, on campus support up to 5 days a week, noting there may be some opportunity to work remotely up to one day per week based on departmental needs. For on-campus, in-person advising, work is usually performed in an office space that requires standing and/or sitting for extended periods of time. For remote (online) advising, faculty will need to provide their own workspace and internet access, noting the College will provide technical equipment and support for online work needs.
Terms of Employment/Salary
This is a full-time, tenure-track position with a 172-day annual contract over 12 months, typically running from July 1 through June 30. This position begins on October 15, 2026, and the salary will be prorated accordingly. Salary placement will be determined based on the number of qualifying years of teaching and/or work experience, combined with educational preparation.
