ROLE SUMMARY

The Shift Lead represents the Operations Director with onsite operational leadership during their assigned shift. The Shift Lead must act independently to provide shift coordination and oversight, ensure timely and effective communication and collaboration with the Operations Supervisor.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

  • Demonstrate judgment and self-sufficiency in effective problem solving while serving as the leader of the assigned shift.
  • Standard intervention in situations involving patients, visitors, staff and external customers.
  • Coordinate operations and personnel activities to meet Priority/Baptist objectives related to the provision of services on designated shifts.
  • Oversee patient care flow while redirecting and allocating resources. 
  • Report patient/customer concerns and report findings to the Operations Supervisor.
  • Coach staff and report potential situations requiring immediate intervention, including interpretation and administration of Priority/Baptist policy and procedures to the Operations Supervisor.
  • Intervene and problem solve inter-departmental issues during his or her shift.
  • Communicate pertinent information in a timely manner to the Operations Director and department leadership.
  • Document information, actions, and decisions and communication to appropriate department leader.
  • Communicate issues identified by front line staff to the Operations Supervisor for follow-up during leadership meetings.
  • Support clinical, operational, and fleet services throughout the entire operation.
  • Collaborate with clinical and dispatch staff to foster delivery of quality care.  (Coordinate activities as needed with communication with the dispatcher and Operations Supervisor).
  • Assist in evaluating and reassigning staff during crisis situations.
  • Monitor emergency action procedures. Start emergency action plan. Evacuate staff as needed.
  • Ensure that all patient documentation is accounted for his/her shift. 
  • Daily inventory of all radios, laptops, tablets, vehicle keys & fuel cards during each shift.
  • Responsible for ensuring all crew members are in approved company uniform and that uniform is clean, neat and serviceable.
  • Perform other duties as assigned. 

 

The incumbent must perform routine tasks in and around the ambulance service building including but not limited to:

 

  • Checking, restocking, inventorying and cleaning any apparatus operated by the company.
  • Cleaning, doing dishes, emptying trash, and other related duties in the station.
  • Representing the ambulance service while on duty at public service functions, exhibitions, and other public events.
  • Being a team player, as EMS is a team effort, and providers must provide necessary assistance to ensure system sanitation, readiness, and adherence to quality assurance standards.
  • Be flexible, as emergency services operate on a 24-hour clock. The incumbent’s assigned work shift schedule may vary, and the incumbent should be available to respond immediately for a call during the assigned work period. The start and shift end times may vary due to the nature of the business.
  • Maintain a thorough working knowledge of local geography, which includes maps, streets, and grid book systems.
  • Maintain a thorough working knowledge of applicable current standards of care, including equipment functions and uses.
  • Conduct him/herself in a courteous, helpful, dignified and professional manner at all times when dealing with patients, coworkers, supervisors, and the public.
  • Show up to work in a clean, serviceable and neat uniform. The employee will not wear any unapproved apparel unless otherwise approved by the leadership team.

  • Communication & Coordination: Effectively communicates with Operations Supervisors, Dispatch, clinical staff, and field personnel to ensure continuity of operations and timely issue escalation.
  • Team Oversight & Coaching: Provides real-time guidance, coaching, and feedback to field staff to support performance, professionalism, and adherence to standards.
  • Policy & Procedure Adherence: Applies and reinforces company policies, protocols, and safety standards consistently and appropriately.
  • Customer & Patient Focus: Maintains a professional, service-oriented approach when interacting with patients, families, partners, and external stakeholders.
  • Crisis & Incident Response: Demonstrates calm, controlled leadership during emergencies, incidents, or system disruptions.
  • Accountability & Documentation: Accurately documents shift activities, incidents, and communications to support operational continuity and leadership follow-up.

REPORTING RELATIONSHIP

The Paramedic Shift Lead reports directly to the Operations Supervisor and serves as a key strategic partner to executive and regional leadership.

Required to submit to random drug screening policy and procedures and may be required to sign a confidentiality agreement.

WORK ENVIRONMENT & TRAVEL

The Shift Lead role operates primarily in a fast-paced, high-acuity emergency medical services environment and includes the following conditions:

  • Work is performed in and around ambulance stations, vehicles, patient care environments, and public settings.
  • Frequent exposure to emergency scenes, variable weather conditions, and high-stress situations.
  • Regular interaction with field crews, dispatch personnel, clinical leadership, and operations management.
  • The role requires flexibility in responding to operational demands, staffing needs, and emergent situations.
  • Shift schedules may include nights, weekends, holidays, and extended hours based on operational requirements.
  • Minimal travel is required.
  • Travel is generally limited to movement between assigned stations, response areas, or nearby operational locations during the assigned shift.
  • Occasional local travel may be required to support operational needs, training, meetings, or special assignments.
Qualifications:

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS

  • High School diploma or GED
  • Tennessee, Mississippi or Arkansas State licensure as a Paramedic
  • Three years field experience as an EMT, ADV EMT, Or Paramedic
  • Must possess and maintain a valid driver’s license
  • Advanced working knowledge of a windows compatible computer and be able to enter necessary data into such

 

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS

The position requires significant physical strength and dexterity and the ability to function in very adverse environments with exposure to numerous safety risks typically found at emergency scenes. This includes but is not limited to; 

  • Lift/Carry weights ranging from a few pounds to in excess of 150 pounds 
  • Bend/Stoop in a range of 1 to 90 degrees
  • Crouch/Kneel
  • Climb while lifting and carrying heavy objects such as a cot or other device with a patient on it
  • Reach, Push/Pull and Handle/Grasp.
  • Maintain balance and strength in awkward positions.
  • Speak clearly under stressful circumstances.
  • Accurately communicate ideas orally and in writing in English.
  • Respond physically with a sense of urgency.
  • Speak loudly.

 

Hazards: The incumbent, when responding to emergency situations, may be exposed to dust, fumes, gases, fire, smoke, adverse weather conditions, and chemicals. There is also exposure to body substances that may contain infectious materials that could cause illness or death. There is potential for bodily harm or death from violent patients, bystanders, or other dangers. At all times the incumbent is expected to adhere to all applicable policies and procedures concerning safety and the prevention of contamination and infection due to blood borne pathogens.
