Join the software team at Shivvers Technology & Innovation Group (STIG) in Ames. Shivvers has led automatic grain drying for more than 55 years; STIG builds the next generation of that platform — the Apex Command Center for dryer control and Auto-Bin for bin-site monitoring and control. This role owns embedded firmware for those products: production release, flashing and test tools, and updates and bug fixes for systems already in the field. You will work with electrical and software engineers on real controllers, sensors, and on-farm equipment, with room to solve hard problems in agricultural automation.

Primary Responsibilities & Duties:
● Write and maintain C firmware for proprietary microcontrollers on Apex Command Center and Auto-Bin Site Controllers.
● Debug printed circuit boards (PCBs) with electrical engineering to support dryer and bin-site hardware.
● Work with communication protocols such as I2C, CAN, ADC, 1-Wire, and related serial interfaces.
● Work on Linux to develop, flash, and support microcontroller software.
● Hands-on soldering, multimeter work, and assembly of the electrical circuitry you program.
● Develop and support production flashing, testing, and firmware-release processes for Apex and Auto-Bin.
● Update and bug-fix released Apex and Auto-Bin systems in the field.
● Support moisture-content (MC) calibrations and sensor timing for temperature, humidity, moisture, CO2, and related grain-condition sensors.
● Travel to farm and grain-site installation locations as needed.
● Follows safety rules and regulations in performing work assignments and maintains a clean and orderly work area.
● Actively participates in continuous improvement activities.
● May assist in other areas as needed.
Position Requirements & Skills:
● Embedded software, firmware, or related experience: 1-5 years.
● BS or MS in Computer Engineering, Software Engineering, Computer Science, Electrical Engineering or related fields.
● Experience in C, Python, and Linux command line; ability to flash and debug microcontrollers.
● Good verbal and written communication skills.
● Strong collaboration and people skills.
● Strong initiative and self-starter.
● U.S. work authorization is required.
● Valid Driver’s License.
Position Preferences:
● Embedded software or firmware experience: 3-5 years.
● Electrical hardware or related experience 1-3 years.
● Experience in agriculture, grain drying, grain storage, or industrial controls.
● Comfort working in a small product team that supports a manufacturing company.
● Experience with production firmware release, flashing tools, or field support of deployed systems.
● Working knowledge of embedded system design and serial communication.
● Enthusiasm in mechanics and how they are controlled by electrical circuits is a plus.
Physical Requirements:
● Ability to sit or stand for long periods of time.
● Ability to perform repetitive operations.
● Ability to lift up to 25lbs frequently; occasionally lift and/or move up to 50lbs.
● Ability to perform repetitive motions such as bending, walking, reaching with hands, grasping, pushing, and pulling.
● Ability to wear PPE (personal protective equipment) as needed. Steel-toed shoes and safety glasses are required when working in factory, testing, or installation areas.
Work Conditions:
● Environment ranges from an office environment to a manufacturing shop environment, to a field application environment with various noise levels and temperatures ranging from hot to cold depending on seasons.
Pay: $70,000.00 - $80,000.00 per year
