About the Opportunity
Shipman & Goodwin LLP is seeking a full-time Legal Billing Specialist to join our team. The ideal candidate will be growth-focused and able to work both collaboratively and independently with multiple attorneys and other legal staff. This position is based out of our Hartford office location.
Responsibilities- As a Legal Billing Specialist, you will be responsible for supporting the firm's billing operations and ensuring the highest standards of accuracy and professionalism. Specific responsibilities and duties include the following:
- Follow all documented billing policies and procedures, ensuring firm standards and guidelines are met at all times.
- Process monthly billing, including specialized and non-standard billing, for selected attorneys and/or client groups, and follow Outside Counsel Guidelines when applicable.
- Monitor assigned billing attorneys' work-in-progress aging and raise concerns regarding matters not being timely billed with the Billing Manager.
- Review prebills and bills designated for electronic submission. Ensure content follows specific e-billing guidelines and rules, and submit bills through BillBlast or forward to the E-Billing Manager for further processing.
- Coordinate with the E-Billing Manager and assist with appeals as necessary for e-billed matters.
- Prepare specialized documents and spreadsheets as requested by billing attorneys and/or clients.
- Perform quality checks on client bills prior to posting, with close attention to and knowledge of bill formats, presentation of paper bills, and negotiated rate agreements such as monthly retainer billing, fixed fee arrangements, and volume discounts.
- Work effectively with all members of the firm to achieve common goals and positive results.
- Candidates should possess an Associate's degree or equivalent experience. A minimum of three to five years of experience with billing, electronic billing, accounting, and administration is required. Law firm or other professional services billing experience is preferred.
- Advanced computer skills in time and billing software Aderant, EIS, Adobe, and Microsoft Office Suite (Excel, Outlook, and Word) are required.
- The successful candidate will demonstrate the ability to work independently and perform well under pressure, multitask daily, and meet all deadlines. Excellent communication skills are essential to effectively interact with clients, firm staff, and attorneys. Candidates must also possess excellent organizational skills and demonstrate a high degree of accuracy in all work performed.
