JOB TITLE: Specialist Teacher Art/Music (Grades KG - 8th)
REPORTS TO: Principal
JOB SUMMARY
The Specialist Teacher instructs and supervises a diverse group of students by establishing a positive, respectful, and engaging learning environment. The teacher provides meaningful and varied learning opportunities, promotes high standards of performance for all students, and supports the social-emotional development of the whole child. As a member of a collaborative K–8 team, the Specialist Teacher contributes to integrated curriculum design, school culture, family engagement, and the shared responsibility of maintaining a joyful, safe, and academically rigorous learning environment.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

Instruction & Curriculum
- Plan and deliver high-quality instruction aligned to Oregon State Standards
- Establish clear instructional objectives and create long- and short-range plans that meet students’ developmental needs and interests
- Develop organized, engaging, and sequential lessons
- Incorporate integrated and thematic learning experiences consistent with Sherwood Charter School’s instructional model
- Assess and differentiate instruction to meet the needs of all learners, including students with IEPs, 504 Plans, and other specialized supports
- Assure that every student has multiple opportunities to demonstrate proficiency
- Use formative and summative assessments to monitor progress and guide instruction
- Provide timely and constructive feedback to students
- Responsible for 1-2 elective classes each trimester, aligned to core subject
- Model and explicitly teach honor, empathy, accountability, respect and teamwork
- Establish and maintain a positive classroom climate
- Develop reasonable classroom expectations and implement proactive classroom management strategies
- Reinforce school wide behavior systems and character development initiatives
- Actively participate in and support special events as outlined in the staff handbook, which may take place outside of normal school hours throughout the school year including subject showcases.
- Maintain open, consistent communication with parents/guardians regarding student progress, behavior, and growth
Schoolwide Theme, Houses Program & Social-Emotional Learning
Sherwood Charter School’s middle school operates within a year-long thematic framework through the Houses Program. The Houses program and social-emotional instruction are essential components of the middle school experience and are a shared responsibility among middle school faculty. The annual theme (e.g., The Power of One) guides interdisciplinary learning, service projects, exhibitions, debates, leadership development, and social-emotional growth.
- Active contribution to the Houses Program throughout the year
- Integrate the annual theme into instruction and field trips when appropriate
- Collaborate and facilitate House-related lessons and social-emotional learning activities
- Contribute to trimester focus areas that align with the annual theme
- Support student leadership, collaboration, and positive peer culture
- Facilitate discussions and activities that build character, empathy, accountability, and teamwork
- Participate in showcases, exhibitions, and service learning projects
Collaboration & Professional Responsibilities
- Work collaboratively as part of a small, cohesive K–8 team to support students’ academic and social-emotional growth
- Participate in Multi-Tiered System of Supports (MTSS) and collaborative problem-solving processes
- Participate in development and implementation of individual student plans (IEP, 504, behavior support plans)

- Support and direct the classroom work of Instructional Aides and volunteers
- Attend and actively participate in staff meetings and professional development
- Reflect upon instructional practice and pursue ongoing professional growth

- Maintain accurate, complete, and confidential student records
- Employ sound judgment in daily interactions and emergency situations
- Adapt to the evolving needs of a charter school environment
- Perform other duties as assigned

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
- Valid Oregon Teaching License with art endorsement
- Understanding of child development and learning theory
- Strong content knowledge in subject areas taught
- Familiarity with age-appropriate instructional and classroom management strategies aligned with current best practices
- Knowledge of Oregon State Standards
- Experience with differentiated instruction
- Effective oral and written communication skills
- Ability to build strong relationships with students and families
- Ability to collaborate within a small-school team environment
- First Aid certification or ability to obtain certification within two months of hire
Preferred:
- Experience with integrated or thematic curriculum
- Experience in a charter or small-school setting
EVALUATION:
Performance will be evaluated annually in accordance with Sherwood Charter School policies and applicable Oregon law.
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:
